A good visit at LCF from the team at IMS Filtri.

Most baristas never see the filter basket. It sits inside the portafilter, does its job, gets ignored. But the precision of those holes, the geometry, the consistency of flow, all of that shapes what ends up in the cup.

IMS have been making them for 70 years out of Pavia. plenty of the Faema machines we service come fitted with them straight from the factory.

Quietly doing the work.

London Coffee Festival 2026.

Four days on the stands with the team. Hundreds of conversations, plenty of espresso pulled, and a few problems solved on the spot.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by. Back to business.

Inside the workshop: the 3 things that damage your espresso machine the most ⚠️☕️

Most machine failures aren’t random - they come down to the same three culprits our engineers see over and over again.

🔹 Scale from untreated water — builds up silently inside your boiler, restricts flow, and eventually kills heating elements. Water filtration isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s the foundation.

🔹 Poor cleaning — skipped backflushes and neglected group heads lead to blockages, residue build-up on internal components, and tainted shots. Your machine is only as clean as your daily routine.

🔹 Incorrect installation — wrong inlet pressure, poor drainage, or a botched setup puts stress on the machine from day one. You’ll pay for it in callouts later.
Left unchecked, any one of these will cost you a machine — or worse, a service during your busiest trading hours.

That’s why we obsess over the fundamentals in the Mulmar workshop. Get the basics right, and you prevent the majority of failures before they ever happen. 🛠️

Inside the workshop: what’s actually happening inside your espresso machine ☕️🔧

Most baristas never see what’s going on behind the panels of their coffee machine — but every shot you pull depends on it.

Inside every espresso machine you’ll find three things working in sync:
🔹 The boiler — heating your water to the right temperature

🔹 The pump — generating the pressure that defines your shot

🔹 The valves - controlling how everything flows through the system

When these components work together precisely, you get a consistent espresso. When one of them is even slightly off, your cup tells the story - channeling, inconsistent temperature, pressure drops, off extractions.

That’s exactly why regular servicing and preventative maintenance isn’t optional. It’s the difference between a café that pulls great shots occasionally, and one that pulls great shots every single time.

Inside the Workshop — Servicing.
Your machine runs under constant internal pressure, every single day. Components wear down over time — even when everything appears to be working fine.

Most cafés don’t service frequently enough. Minor wear becomes major failure. What could have been a routine fix becomes an unexpected breakdown.

At minimum, one full service a year. Preventive maintenance in between. That’s how you keep your machine reliable.

Inside the Workshop — Scale.
The most common issue we see in the workshop. Calcium builds up over time. When heated, it creates restrictions — leading to inconsistent coffee and damage to key components.
Prevention is always easier than repair. Proper water filtration and regular servicing keep your machine performing at its best.

You can have the most advanced machine in the world.

But when it stops, none of that matters.

AI, automation, smart systems they all have a place.
But coffee is still a hands-on industry. And when something needs fixing, you need someone who knows exactly what they’re doing.

Because you’re not selling machines.
You’re selling coffee. Every minute counts.

That’s why service isn’t an afterthought.
It’s the system behind the system.

At Mulmar, the focus is simple:
train better, respond faster, keep cafés running.

The fundamentals haven’t changed.
Boiler. Heat exchanger. Pressure.

But everything around them has.

Modern coffee machines are no longer just mechanical - they’re intelligent. Built to control consistency, reduce variables, and deliver the same result, every time.

And when something needs fixing, the approach has changed too.

With modular design, components can be removed, repaired off-site, and returned quickly - minimising disruption and keeping cafés running.

Less downtime. More coffee.
