Parbuckling timber at our local Hatherleigh Country Fair. Before machinery, when large pieces of timber had been dragged out of the woods with chains, timber was loaded onto timber wagons by using the power of the horse and ropes as demonstrated in this video. The vehicle in this clip is used for demonstration purposes only. The timber wagons were much larger.

I have some very sad news 2 weeks ago, one of our mares Dolly, gave birth to an enormous foal with such long legs. I called him Flash. However he struggled to be able to get up and when helped really struggled with his coordination and balance, so I had to bottle feed him every 2 hours. I managed to get him to the point where he was able to get up and walk on his own and there was hope. However, in the end it was not meant to be. Having to feed him so often, he became my life. He was the sweetest thing and a real fighter. It was an honour to have played such a large part in the life of such a young soul.

Rowing up forming small beds in preparation for putting in transplants. It is really important to have a nice steady horse in order to keep a straight line!

View from on board the cultimulcher showing the great work it does working over the soil ready for planting. We have clay in our soil so it is important to break the clods down before they become too hard from the sun.

Its the start of a new day and we are off to do some ploughing!

Horselogging the modern way. The incredible power of these horses over short distances and their ability to move sideways means that these horses are really versatile in the woods and we can extract large quantities of timber in a day.
