You won’t find many big egos around here.

What you will find is people who care about getting things right.
People who know their craft, learn from the people around them and pass that knowledge on. People who understand that the best work is rarely about one person - it’s about everyone pulling in the same direction.

That’s always been the way in the Borders.

Quietly capable. Properly determined.

And now, that spirit is in the bottle.

Eight years ago, the first malt new make spirit flowed from our stills in Hawick.

Since then, it has rested, matured and changed - slowly, quietly, deliberately.

Something is nearly ready.

The barley doesn’t head straight from the field to our mash tun.

First, it makes its way to Simpsons Malt, where it’s malted, preparing the grain for the next stage of its journey.

Then it comes back to us at The Borders Distillery, ready to be mashed, fermented and distilled into our award-winning new make spirit. Then into oak casks to become our single malt Scotch whisky, or into our Carterhead still to become Kerr's Gin or Puffing Billy Vodka.

From seed, to field, to malt, to spirit, we can trace where our barley comes from and the people involved along the way.

That’s the thing about making whisky in the Scottish Borders. It’s never just one person, one place or one process. It’s a whole chain of people, land, making and time, woven together.

There’s a place in Scotland that has never been afraid to make its mark.

A land of rolling hills, working farms and fast-running rivers. A place shaped by what it could make from what it had - wool into tweed, cashmere into knitwear, ideas into things that travelled far beyond its borders.

The Borders has always looked outward. Always reached further.

Now, something new is taking shape here. Rooted on our land, but made for the world to enjoy.

It starts with the land. 🌾

The Scottish Borders has always been a working landscape. Rolling fields, rivers, hills and farmland - a place where what the land offers has long been turned into things of worth.

For us, that starts with barley.

We use 100% Borders barley, grown across 10 local farms within 30 miles of the distillery. It’s part of what makes our Scotch whisky of this place - not simply made here, but connected to it from the very beginning.

Great whisky doesn't come from nowhere - it all starts with the land.

No legends. No figureheads. No ego.

Just people who know how to show up, learn thoroughly and get the job done, like Andy and the team at Harpertoun Farm.

The same quiet determination that has always run through the Borders - from the farms to the mills - is now running through our still house.
Skills passed hand to hand. Knowledge built through doing. Pride that doesn’t need to shout.

They won’t tell you they’re making something extraordinary.

They’ll tell you they’re getting on with it.

Harvest time is here. 🌾

There’s something pretty special about seeing the start of our Scotch whisky’s story happening right here in the Borders.

Our barley is 100% sourced locally, from 10 farms within 30 miles of the distillery. This week, we’re following the harvest at Harpertoun - from standing crop to freshly cut grains of barley, seeing first-hand the people and land behind every batch of our Borders spirit.

It’s a working land, and it’s always been about making things properly.

Now, it’s time to get the barley in. Follow us along this harvest at Harpertoun farm.

Please drink responsibly. Visit drinkaware.co.uk for the facts.
