The importance of poo picking 💩
Poo picking is one of those jobs that can sometimes be overlooked, but it is actually a really important part of good horse care and pasture management.
A field isn’t just somewhere for horses to eat - it’s their living environment, and keeping it well managed has a huge impact on their health and wellbeing.
Regular poo picking helps to:
✨ Reduce the risk of worms and parasites
Horses pass worm eggs in their droppings. These can develop into larvae on the pasture, which horses can then pick up while grazing. Removing droppings regularly helps to break this cycle and works alongside a good worm management programme.
✨ Keep grazing areas healthier
Horses naturally avoid eating around areas where they have toileted. Over time, this creates patches of longer, rougher grass that they won’t graze, while other areas become more heavily eaten. Regular poo picking helps make better use of the grazing available.
✨ Support good pasture management
Fields take a lot of wear and tear from our horses, especially during wetter months. Staying on top of poo picking helps keep paddocks cleaner, more manageable and healthier throughout the year.
✨ Protect the long-term condition of the field
A well cared for paddock provides a better environment for horses to move, graze and relax in.
It’s definitely not the most glamorous job (especially in the winter mud! 😅), but it’s one of those small daily jobs that makes a big difference.
The little things really do add up when it comes to horse care 💜🐴
