What fun hosting Imogen Butterworth Farmers with her gold top milk today! Currently Imogen is milking 6 cows on her ethical cow & calf dairy in East Sussex. It takes her an hour and she bottles her milk to sell direct from her farm and at local markets. It was fantastic to have her here on the farm today and despite the rain we gave her a pretty warm Butterbox welcome 😉 so huge thanks to everyone who showed up to support her today 🙏👏

On a warm Saturday morning some goats woke up on the farm. The sun came out and soon the goats were hungry… they started to look for some food.

On Saturday they ate through one hedge but they were still hungry.

On Sunday they ate two apple trees, but they were still hungry.

On Monday they ate three T-shirts off the washing line but they were still hungry.

On Tuesday they ate 4 Dahlias and now we have no flowers to sell. They were still hungry…

On Wednesday they ate 5 rose bushes and ruined the garden entirely. They were still hungry…

On Thursday they ate through 6 buckets of chicken food (and then upset the chickens by sleeping in their trailer) but they were still hungry.

On Friday they ate through 7 scarecrows on the lawn (a polite reminder that they are ready to collect now if you’d like them back 😉)

On Saturday Gav locked them in the barn, barricaded the pen with hurdles and contained them for one whole day - the farm yard is safe…!

Quiet out in the fields this week…it certainly is a welcome break from driving bales out in the paddocks every day 😅 we’re feeding the cattle in the shed instead!

As many of you will be aware from your brown and crispy lawns - we aren’t growing much grass this summer… we’ve been feeding Winter hay now for a month and it certainly piles the pressure onto the system…

Our bales are expensive - imagine opening your fridge one day and all the foods gone and suddenly you’re ordering in a takeaway every night and there’s no guarentee when that fridge will be refilled… it also means that we have to adapt our system. We can’t mob graze our cattle when the mob have nothing to graze! So we’re opening up paddocks, rolling our bales and struggling to keep anything behind electric for too long. We’re keeping the cattle moving to keep them amused, but also trying to keep them under shade for the weeks when the heat gets too much!

So it feels like the farm can breathe a sigh of relief this week when we take 130 hungry mouths off it and house Team Tiny Hooves in the shed! We are TB testing this week so we need everyone in for quick and easily handling. We have completed part one and now we await tomorrow to read the results of the test.

Our cattle will remain in this weekend whilst we sort groups and prepare wires for them to head back to our pastures, so if you’ve missed seeing them this is the weekend to visit! You won’t recognise those dinky little calves from March…! Now rivalling their mothers in size and bringing double the attitude 🐮😉

We can’t believe we are finally doing this…! 🥛 Here’s a collaboration we’ve been REALLY looking forward to…

Earlier in the year we were thrilled to take a look round Imogen and Davids cow and calf micro dairy in East Sussex 🐮🫶👀

We loved meeting the milking Dexters, and seeing their mobile milking parlour. The ladies walk in straight off the field, get milked, and then go back to their calves in the paddock. It’s the most fantastic cow & calf microdairy we could have hoped to come across.

Imogen is so passionate about her cows and about the extensive benefits of drinking raw milk. She began her herd in 2022 with 5 pedigree Dexter cows. Her herd has now grown to be 50 cows including a few Jerseys. Her cows are milked once a day, and in her grass based extensive system they remain with their calves until the calves self wean. She knows every cow by their name and they are treated with the utmost care.

THIS SATURDAY Imogen is bringing her milk to Butterbox Farm! She will be with us 9am to 3pm and talking all things RAW! If you’d like to come and meet Imogen and learn about the benefits of drinking raw milk, her cow & calf dairy and get yourself a big bottle of her fantastic milk then this is the weekend to visit!

We are open Saturday 9 to 3 and on top of the excitement of having Imogen and her milk here, we also have our cattle in the shed this week whilst we TB test and sort groups. So if you’re a big cow fan (a big fan of small cows I should say) then come and meet our Dexter herd this weekend!

What a winner!! 🏆 Let’s debrief on Scarecrow Fest 2026 😉🙌

You voted the fabulous Brighton & Hove Fostering your winner! 💜💜💜 One huge Butterbox BBQ box on its way for their fantastic team! 🤩

We had 20 fantastic scarecrows this year and all of them were made with so much effort that it was no surprise that the votes were so close! We can’t thank you enough for taking part and making our field look so cheerful this week! If you’d like to come and grab your scarecrow - we will have them dismantled and ready for you next weekend ☺️

We are so grateful to everyone that came and walked our scarecrow trail and made a donation in the shop. You guys have donated a fantastic £350 worth of meat for the Burgess Hill Pantry who will make sure that it goes to very deserving local families in need. We will also be putting together a big box of sausages to take in alongside your donations and £100 cash from your scarecrow entries which will be used to go towards packed lunch bits for their members children next week. If you would still like to make a donation or help the charity further then you can reach out directly to them 🧡 all support is hugely appreciated.

We loved our Brighton & Hove fostering team scarecrows and loved the conversations that the fostered scarecrow pair raised on the trail, we loved hearing that a lady from our village visiting at the same time as the fantastic team who had made the scarecrows went home to register herself to become a foster carer with them 💜

Thank you for making our community event a proper community event! We raised awareness for a great local charity, we raised funds and food for local families, we raised awareness of local businesses doing great work and making great products and we all had some fun throwing hooplas and shooting some nerf guns at crows! 😜🙌

We’re packing up our trail this week but we’ve got something REALLY exciting planned for next weekend… 🥛 raw milk fans - put Saturday in your diary!!

We’re a little late crowning our scarecrow winner (but we have one!) look forward to that later on today… 😜

But it’s a slow start for us on the farm this morning as the smallest rustiest edition to the farmyard had a breakdown and required a trip to the out of hours vets in Chichester last night…

Breaking my heart, our sleep and of course Gavins wallet, she is now home and seemingly quite well…having tricked a farmyard and a veterinary surgery into suspecting that she may have twisted her gut, it was in fact hopefully just the most expensive 💩 of her life…

‘Atta girl Rusty, currently costing us more than every other dog we’ve owned in our lifetimes combined..💪 good job you’re a legend…!

We’re keeping a close eye on our little orange dog today and shuffling cows into the shed later on for TB testing next week. But we will be sharing our scarecrow winner, our raffle winner and some exciting news about what you fabulous lot have raised for our chosen charity later on 🙌🫶

A busy week! We haven’t even had a chance to share our excitement about what fell from the sky this week 🙌☔️ but we are excited to get our scarecrows lined up this morning and collect some good food for the Burgess Hill Pantry💪

If you’d like to take part in our pay it forward scheme at the till - please just ask us to add your donation when you do your shop and we will be packing up big boxes of our quality homegrown meat to take across to families in need next week 🫶🙌 so far you guys have donated a fantastic amount and we are so grateful! 🙏

There is no charge to enjoy our scarecrow trail, games and crafts but we would so appreciate any donations for our chosen charity 🧡
