Look at the tall cabinet on the left. Its doors are hinged in the middle, so they fold back on themselves and never swing out into the room. While they're open, the kettle, the toaster and the glasses are all within reach and nobody has to walk around a door. Close them after breakfast and the crumbs vanish too. It's a detail we love, and one worth copying.

An is where everyone ends up standing, usually with their back to it and a cup of tea in hand. So this kitchen was planned around it: a mantel above to frame it, drawers beside it for the pans, and a curved peninsula a few steps away where people can lean and chat without getting under the cook's feet. That rounded end is kind to hips, too. Timeless really is the word.

Most cooks spend dinner time facing a wall. This one faces the garden. The hob and both ovens were built into the island, so everything hot is within one step and the view through the glass doors comes free with every meal. Guests take the chairs opposite, away from the heat but close enough to chat. Would you agree the cook deserves the best view in the house?

Four favourites from this project, and they share one talent: nothing is seen until it's needed. The hob sits flush in the island and pulls the steam downwards, the fridge and freezer hide behind cabinet doors, the breakfast cabinet closes on the toaster crumbs, and an oak cutlery tray was made to measure for the client's own knives and forks. A calm kitchen, with all the clever parts kept out of sight.

Plenty of companies can build a kitchen. What takes longer, and matters more, is the part before any wood is cut: sitting down in the showroom and listening to how your home is really lived in. That is where the arched pantry, the breakfast dresser and the details that match from room to room all began. Think we could help with yours? Get in contact, the kettle's on.

Bathroom lights usually go on the ceiling, which is why so many mirrors show a shadow under each eye. Here they were moved to the wall instead, set beside the mirrors at face height, so the light arrives from the front and nobody has to shave or do their make-up in the gloom. As for the fluted oak drawers underneath, they're just showing off.

Where did the extractor hood go? Into the hob. Steam is pulled down through the vent in the middle of the glass, which left the wall behind free for something far nicer than stainless steel: a panel of antiqued mirror. It bounces the garden back into the room, and the cook can see who has just walked in without turning round. Would you agree it beats staring at tiles?

A TV is rarely the prettiest thing in a living room, so this one was given good company. It sits framed in the middle of a wall of cabinetry made to the exact width of the room, with open shelves on both sides and a brass picture light above each. In the evening the ornaments glow as well as the screen, while the cupboards below quietly swallow the remotes, the cables and the board games.
