British Flowers Week – Day 4: Every Flower Has a Story 👨‍🌾🥰

As growers, we spend a lot of time thinking about seeds, weather forecasts, weeds, watering cans and what’s coming into bloom next.

But once our flowers leave the farm, they begin a story of their own.

Over the years, Home Farm Flowers have been part of weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, new homes, thank you gifts, celebrations, moments of remembrance and much more.

Some have travelled down the aisle.

Some have sat proudly on kitchen tables.

Some have been gifted to bring comfort during difficult times.

Others have been pressed and preserved through our Seed to Art creations so their beauty can be enjoyed for years to come.

We’ve smiled at photographs of brides carrying bouquets grown from tiny seeds sown months before. We’ve received messages from customers whose flowers brightened a difficult week. We’ve helped families celebrate, remember and say goodbye. Those moments are a privilege and never something we take for granted.

One flower.

Many stories.

That’s one of the things we love most about growing flowers.

We may sow the seed, nurture the plant and harvest the bloom, but the real magic happens when flowers become part of someone’s life, memories and milestones.

We grow the flowers, but the stories belong to you. 💚

We’d love to know…

What is the most memorable bouquet or flowers you’ve ever received, given, grown, or even pressed and preserved yourself? 🌸

British Flowers Week – Day 3: Flowers for the Future

One of the themes of this year’s British Flowers Week is Flowers for the Future.
As flower farmers, that feels very fitting because we’re always looking ahead.
Only yesterday we were sowing biennials for flowers in 2027, discussing next year’s bulb order and adding even more varieties to our ever-growing seed wish list.

We also tend to over-sow a little, just in case of failures—and of course, to make sure there’s plenty left for the wildlife too! 😂

But “Flowers for the Future” means so much more than planning next season’s flowers.

It means creating spaces where wildlife can thrive. It means leaving flowers for the bees.
It means watching tadpoles grow in the pond. It means seeing our granddaughter picking flowers, making pressed flower cards and discovering the joy of flowers, nature and the changing seasons.

Today also reminded us how important it is to connect with others who share the same passion. We had a lovely meeting with another local grower, Craigend Nursery, Cardross, and it was so nice to exchange ideas, experiences and knowledge. There is always something new to learn from fellow growers, and those conversations help strengthen the future of locally grown flowers.

Perhaps that’s why we love Seed to Art so much. A flower’s story doesn’t end when it’s picked. Through pressing and preserving, we can enjoy and share its beauty long after the season has passed, capturing a little piece of each year to treasure.

When we walk around the flower field in the evening, hearing the bees settle down for the night and breathing in the scent of sweet rocket, we’re reminded that we’re only one small part of something much bigger.

Every seed sown is an investment in the future. Every flower grown supports pollinators and wildlife. Every bouquet, arrangement and stem tells a story of the season in which it was grown.

And every time someone chooses flowers grown closer to home, they’re helping support growers, florists, small businesses and the future of British flowers.
That’s why we grow flowers.
Not just for today, but for tomorrow too. 🌸🐝🌱

British Flowers Week – Day 2 🌱

People often imagine flower farming is all bouquets, sunshine and pretty photographs. The reality? Every day is different and there’s always another job waiting!

Today included picking flowers, deliveries, weeding, planting overdue seedlings, feeding the dahlias and sweet peas, propagating, auditing seed boxes, and sowing biennials for flowers in 2027 (yes, really… 2027!). We were also already discussing next spring’s bulb order! 🙈

Our granddaughter helped pick flowers and make pressed flower cards, the tadpoles seem to have doubled in size overnight, and Daisy was on patrol as usual. Haud It & Daud It were never far away when an extra pair of hands was needed, while Jeanette somehow found time for a facial and came back looking even more beautiful than before! ✨

This evening the scent of sweet rocket drifted across the field while the bees settled down to sleep inside the flowers. The midges, unfortunately, were also enjoying the evening! 🤣

This photo is our chamomile. By evening the petals hang like little skirts around the yellow centres, only to lift again in the sunshine the next day. One of those tiny wonders you only notice when you spend your days amongst the flowers. 🌼

Flower farming means living in several seasons at once — harvesting flowers for today, sowing seeds for 2027, and planning next spring’s bulbs.

Some flowers are for us, some are for the bees, some are for the butterflies, and some are for the slugs! 🐌🐝🦋

British Flowers Week – Day 2: A Day in the Life of a Flower Farmer/Florist

People often imagine flower farming is all bouquets, sunshine and pretty photographs.

The reality? Every day is different and there’s always another job waiting!

Today’s list included:

🌱 Picking flowers for online orders and subscriptions
🌱 Delivering flowers to customers
🌱 Weeding (always weeding!)
🌱 Planting out some very overdue annual seedlings 🙈
🌱 Feeding the dahlias and sweet peas
🌱 Auditing our seed boxes
🌱 Propagating (oh no! Not more plants says Jeanette 😆)
🌱 Adding even more varieties to our seed wish list
🌱 Sowing biennials for flowers in 2027 (yes, really… 2027!)
🌱 Conversations about next year’s spring bulb order already 😳🙃
🌱 Entertaining our granddaughter, who loved picking flowers and making pressed flower cards
🌱 Checking on the tadpoles, which seem to have grown massively overnight
🌱 Answering messages and planning future flowers

Meanwhile, Daisy was on patrol as usual, Haud It & Daud It were never far away when an extra pair of hands was needed, and Jeanette somehow managed to sneak off for a facial and came back looking even more beautiful than before! ✨

This evening, as we wandered around the flower field, the scent from the sweet rocket was absolutely heady. The bees were settling down for the night, tucked inside the flowers, while the midges were out in force reminding us that flower farming isn’t always glamorous! 🤣 We are absolutely loving our giant scabious! We’ve patiently waited two years for these stars and they are just amazing!

This photo is our chamomile. It always fascinates us. By evening the petals hang like little skirts around the yellow centres, only to lift and dance again in the sunshine the next day. One of those little details you only notice when you spend your days amongst the flowers. 🌼

What many people don’t see is that flower farming means living in several seasons at once. Today we were harvesting flowers for this summer, sowing seeds for 2027, and planning next spring’s bulbs.

Some flowers are for us, some are for the bees, some are for the butterflies and, unfortunately, some are for the slugs! 🐌🐝🦋

A little bit of chaos, a lot of flowers, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

🌸 British Flowers Week is here! 🌸

This week is all about celebrating the beauty, diversity and seasonality of flowers grown right here in the UK.

At Home Farm Flowers, every stem tells a story. From tiny seeds sown in our polytunnels to armfuls of blooms harvested from our flower field overlooking the Clyde, we’re proud to grow seasonal Scottish flowers that support pollinators, reduce flower miles and connect people with the changing seasons.

This morning’s harvest includes flowers that simply wouldn’t look the same at any other time of year – and that’s exactly what we love about British-grown blooms. No two weeks, and no two bouquets, are ever quite the same.

Whether you’ve bought a bouquet, attended a workshop, followed our journey, or simply stopped to admire the flowers, thank you for supporting local flower farming.

Here’s to a week of celebrating British flowers and the people who grow them. 🇬🇧🌸

🏓🌸 Supporting Local Talent – On and Off the Court 🌸🏓

At Home Farm Flowers & Crafts, we’re incredibly proud to sponsor the Lomond Smashers & Lomond Lobbers pickleball teams.

Today saw another round of league matches as part of Pickleball Scotland, with our very own Haud It & Daud It taking to the court for Division 3 West (B).

As a small local business, we believe in supporting our community, whether that’s through flowers, events, local charities, or grassroots sport. It’s fantastic to see so many people enjoying pickleball, building friendships, staying active and representing the area in league competition.

We’re enjoying following the teams’ progress throughout the season and cheering them on from the sidelines. Although we may occasionally have to give certain members of the Home Farm team a little time off for “essential pickleball practice”… 🤣🏓

Good luck to everyone involved with the Lomond Smashers & Lomond Lobbers for the rest of the season. We’ll be watching with interest!

Celebrating a growing movement 🌸

We’re delighted to be featured in the second edition of The Flower Farmer magazine as part of an article about Flowers Grown in Scotland, written by Iona from Brodalie in Bloom on behalf of the organisation.

What makes this magazine so special is that it has been created by a flower farmer, for flower farmers, florists and flower lovers. Founded by grower Sofie Stewart, The Flower Farmer is the first magazine of its kind in the UK dedicated entirely to British-grown flowers and the people behind them.

As demand continues to grow for seasonal, locally grown and sustainably produced flowers, it’s wonderful to see the stories of flower growers being shared and celebrated.

We’re proud to be part of Flowers Grown in Scotland and honoured to be featured alongside fellow growers including Iona and Emma from Bee Flower Farm.

The photograph featured in the article was taken during one of our Tea & Tour events and captures something we love sharing with visitors — the beauty, scent and seasonality of flowers grown right here in Scotland.

A heartfelt thank you to Sofie and The Flower Farmer magazine, to Iona for telling the story of Flowers Grown in Scotland so beautifully, and to all the volunteers who work behind the scenes to support Scottish flower growers.

Together we’re helping more people discover the joy of flowers grown closer to home. 🌿💚🌸

👨‍🌾👨‍🌾 Celebrating a growing movement 🌸

We’re delighted to be featured in the second edition of The Flower Farmer magazine as part of an article about Flowers Grown in Scotland, written by Iona from Brodalie in Bloom on behalf of the organisation.

What makes this magazine particularly special is that it has been created by a flower farmer, for flower farmers, florists and flower lovers. Founded by Sofie Stewart, herself a grower, The Flower Farmer is the first magazine of its kind in the UK dedicated entirely to the world of British-grown flowers and the people behind them.

At a time when more people are asking where their flowers come from and seeking seasonal, sustainably grown alternatives to imported blooms, it feels as though there is real momentum building behind British and Scottish-grown flowers.

We are proud that Flowers Grown in Scotland has been part of that conversation. The article highlights the work being done across Scotland to champion local flowers, support growers and florists, and encourage more people to discover the beauty of flowers grown with the seasons.

We’re honoured to be featured alongside fellow growers including Iona from Brodalie in Bloom and Emma from Bee Flower Farm, and proud to be part of such a supportive and collaborative community.

The photograph featured in the article was taken during one of our Tea & Tour events and perfectly captures what we love most — inviting people into the flower field to experience first-hand the beauty, scent and seasonality of locally grown flowers.

A huge thank you to Sofie and The Flower Farmer magazine for creating a platform dedicated to our industry, to Iona for telling the story of Flowers Grown in Scotland so beautifully, and to the many volunteers who work behind the scenes to make FGIS such a positive force for Scottish flower growers.

As working group members ourselves, we see first-hand the passion, generosity and collaboration that drives the organisation forward, and we’re incredibly proud to be part of it.

Together we’re helping to grow a future where more flowers are grown closer to home, enjoyed in season and valued for the stories they tell.

💚 Proud to be part of Flowers Grown in Scotland.
🌸 Grown with the seasons.

🌸 All set up and ready for a wonderful day at Scone Palace Garden Fair! 🌸

One of the best things about events like this is catching up with fellow flower growers and finally meeting some of the lovely members of Flowers Grown in Scotland in person. It’s always inspiring to spend time with people who share the same passion for seasonal, locally grown flowers and are working together to champion Scottish-grown blooms.

The showground is already buzzing with visitors, the sun is shining, and we’re looking forward to meeting lots of new faces throughout the day.

If you’re visiting Scone Palace, do come and say hello — we’d love to meet you and have a chat about flowers, growing, pressing, drying and all things floral.

Wishing everyone exhibiting a fantastic day and a successful weekend. 🌿💐

Craigend Nursery, Cardross can you spot your flowers?
