6 month old heifer calf out of a heifer. Incredible growth through the winter AVG 1.41kg per day. Just proving a low input system doesn't have to mean poor performance. Perhaps this is a case to move to autumn calving?

First calf born for 2024, a little earlier than expected. Calf up and sucking within hours. However, I took the decision to bring mum and calf in for a few days.

The calf seemed to enjoy its first class trip back and mum followed with ease.

When will it stop raining? Amazingly the ground is just about holding up, but please let spring hurry up.

In the world of farming, maintaining a consistent level of performance is paramount. It serves as a barometer of our daily efforts and, in the end, plays a crucial role in the financial health of our operations.

Today's job, weighing our lambs, and the results are not bad. With an average weight of 40.5kg and decent daily gains. This is all from grass and forage.

Lamb boxes should be available for pre order mid January onwards. Please do send us a message if interested.

Before and after.

This is the impact after having 100 head of cattle grazing. To be honest with the weather we have been seeing in the UK, I am quite happy with the aftermath. This cell will now be rested until late spring.

As you can see there is a little poaching. There is also a lot of biomass trodden into the soil and lots of manure to increase organic matter.

It would be nice if we could just have a few days break from the endless rain 🌧️

As its SOIL WEEK, I thought it would be a good idea to grab a shovel and see what's going on underground.

The short answer is lots. Considering the rain we have had recently it's amazing to see the soil is moist but not sodden. And of course we had lots of earthworms.

The first photo shows soil from a herbal let est. 2017 and permanent pasture. For all the great press herbal leys are receiving, I still think you can't beat permanent diverse pasture. Can you tell which is which??

Hedgerows are massively important to nature. Providing shelter, a nature corridor and a source of food for many forms of life. This hedge has been layed and has been trimmed back, but only a little. We should see plenty of growth in the spring. But for now I think it looks pretty neat and tidy.
