Improve your digestion

In a previous post I discussed the importance of the cephalic response in starting the digestive process. In our fast paced world, there are times when it’s not possible to prepare food from scratch, and I often ask my clients to just think about their options, there are often simple ways to improve their digestion, even when they are out and about…

Tip 1

20-30 minutes before eating take time to think about what you are going to eat.

Think about how the food looks, how does it smell, what does it taste like, how does it feel in your mouth, how does it make you feel.

All of this can trigger that cephalic response and improve the process of digestion and minimise digestive issues.

Tip 2

Certain foods help to stimulate digestion - Have you ever been to a restaurant and had a steak to find an unceremonious lump of rocket on the side? Do you eat it or do you scowl at it?
The addition of rocket is not a mistake - as well as being decorative it can help with the process of digestion because as a bitter leaf rocket can support the production of stomach acid, bile and digestive enzymes which all help to break down your food.
If you’re choosing an appetizer, remember to chose something green, fresh, and bitter.. it enhances the meal and is also hugely beneficial in stimulating the cephalic response.
Other bitter foods include nettle, broccoli, watercress, chicory and bitter chocolate.

If you suffer with digestive issues, it's often important to go right back to the basics to work out if your body has all the cues it needs - removing foods and adding supplements often aren't the answer.

As a Registered Nutritional Therapist I am always interested in helping people improve their digestion!

Wheatgrass is one of nature's superfoods, it is the juvenile growth of the wheat or spelt seed. A popular dietary supplement referred to by health food experts as a green superfood because it has exceptional nutritional properties.

As fresh wheatgrass is a complete food for many animals, it is no surprise that is packed full of essential nutrients. These include proteins in the form of amino acids, a vast array of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and phytonutrients, ideal for those seeking maximum cell vitality, which is a foundation for good health.A shot of wheatgrass juice is like a single complete supplement. It is a source of B vitamins, including vitamin B12, folic acid, and also vitamins A, C, E. Wheatgrass also contains minerals: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc and selenium. Wheatgrass juice has so many properties that it needs to be taken seriously in today's world - full of stress, toxins and poor eating habits. The benefits of drinking wheatgrass can be seen in many ways - including increased vitality, well-being and energy levels.

However human beings cannot digest the grass itself so in order to have any nutritional value it needs to be passed through a masticating or cold press juicer which squeezes the blades of grass, extracting the juice. How much juice you consume is a personal preference. A 30ml “shot” should be plenty for maintaining that “bright eyed, bushy tailed” look that wheatgrass juice is famous for.

It can be an acquired taste as it is quite strong and sweet in flavour. If you find the flavour too strong it can be mixed with other fresh juices but orange juice is best avoided as it may be too acidic. We would recommend consuming it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach but it is possible to drink it any time of the day.

Wheatgrass is available in frozen form but we believe that the fresher the better. That's why we recommend starting your journey with ready grown wheatgrass and masticated hand juicer but if you are unable to juice or have no space for it, frozen wheatgrass is the best option for you. We will post it in a polystyrene box with ice packs to ensure it reaches you frozen.

A tray of our wheatgrass when fully grown should yield six to eight 30ml shots. For convenience we sell the trays in three different lengths, fully grown (ready to juice) then medium and short. The medium trays are ready in 2 – 3 days after delivery, the short 5-7 days after delivery. This ensures you have a continuous supply. The fully grown trays will keep for up to a week in cool but light conditions so that it stays green, the medium and short trays need warmth (around 20 degrees ) and light to ensure they keep growing.

An alternative to having fresh trays delivered is to have it in frozen cups. Our frozen wheatgrass juice comes in handy 30ml cups and defrosts quickly for convenience. We juice our wheatgrass every week and freeze it immediately in a blast freezer ensuring it is as fresh as possible for our customers. As this is a very popular product the turnover is high so you really are getting as fresh a batch as possible. The shelf life of the frozen cups is around 6 months. This is a much more suitable alternative if space and time are in short supply.

We believe that wheatgrass makes amazing difference by boosting you, but it is no all you need to make sure you are on your path to healthy life. Your body need balance in order of keeping you fit and healthy. You can't keep eating the same dish every day, remember to introduce different food from time to time. Try to drink juices every day - it not only keeps you hydrated but also its great way of taking in lots of nutrient, we recommend adding sunflower greens or peas to your daily juice. Drinking a glass of fresh juice instead of coffee is a best way to start your day. Remember that it is best to drink green juices instead of ones based on sweet vegetables or fruits as they do not knock your blood sugar off balance.
Did you known that Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for good health. However, excess omega-3 may have blood-thinning effects. Fish oil is also very high in vitamin A, which can be dangerous in large amounts.
Coffee has been linked to many health benefits. However, too much caffeine may cause adverse effects in some people.

We are not an experts on this matter so we recommend contacting certified nutrition-er who can help with creating right diet for you.

Sprouts are the superfood you can grow at home in a jar. Once considered the staple diet for vegans they are now gaining popularity as they are so quick and easy to produce and incredibly healthy. They need little time or space, barely any equipment.
They do not need to be cooked before consumption and can be eaten on their own but are delicious added to sandwiches and wraps, soup, stir fry, dips, casseroles etc and also make a nice garnish.
To get started growing your own sprouts all you need is some seed and a wide necked jar with a mesh lid or some muslin and water.

At Aconbury we offer a Living Foods Sprouting kit which contains all you need to get started with the most popular variety of seeds for sprouting.

Add one or two tablespoons of seed to a clean jar, fill with water (from the tap is fine) and leave them to soak overnight. In the morning strain the water from the jar through the mesh lid or with muslin attached by a rubber band/string etc. Then rinse the seed by swirling some fresh water around in the jar. Drain the water away and leave the seed to do their magic. You will need to rinse the seed every morning, sometimes twice a day in warmer weather. Your sprouts will be ready when the seeds all have a “tail” one to two centimetres long. Depending on the variety this can take just a couple of days or up to a week. Once they are ready they can be stored in the fridge for up to a week.

But what seeds to sprout? We would recommend choosing organic seed as they will be free of chemicals so you really will be consuming 100% nutritious sprouts. It is also important to pick seeds that are free of their husks as these can be tough and hard to eat. Alfalfa, chickpeas and mung beans are the seeds most often associated with sprouts but there is a wide range that are suitable for growing in a jar. These include aduki beans, lentils, radish, fenugreek, red clover, broccoli and sunflower to name but a few.

In addition to the kit we stock a wide variety of seed and also spare jars so you can have more than one variety on the go at the same time. Our seeds have all been tested for their germination properties as well as pathgogens e-coli, salmonella and listeria so you can rest assured you are buying from a quality source.

Sprouting in jars is very easy but a few tips may be useful...
If you see white “hair” appearing don't panic, it's not mould, it's the seed telling you they need more water and they're putting out “hairs” to find so so just give them an extra rinse, they're perfectly harmless.

Some seed can go slimy if they don't get enough air, if it looks like this is happening give them another rinse and don't put the lid/mesh covering back on so that the air can circulate more freely.
