Heysham CC 104-2 beat Torrisholme CC 103 all out
HEYSHAM CC ARE PROMOTED TO THE NORTHERN LEAGUE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE CLUB'S HISTORY!
It's difficult to put into words what yesterday means to everyone connected with Heysham Cricket Club.
After years of hard work, commitment and dedication from players, volunteers, committee members and supporters, we are a Northern League Club for the first time ever!
In what was the biggest game in the clubs history the lads produced a performance that perfectly summed up this team.
After winning the toss and electing to field, Heysham got off to the perfect start. Jamie Cassidy and Dylan Jackson asked questions from the outset, building pressure the never allowed Torrisholme to settle.
The breakthrough wickets kept coming and Heysham remained on top throughout. Sam Calverley was outstanding with the ball, finishing with superb figures of 5-33 from 8 overs, while Ollie Toulmin picked up two wickets of his own as Torrisholme were bowled out for 103 in 26.5 overs.
In what could have proven to be a nervy chase Heysham CC skipper Jamie Cassidy promoted the destructive Sam Calverley to open the batting. His plan worked perfectly as Sam produced an innings that will be talked about at Carr Lane for years to come.
His 66 from just 30 balls, including 8 sixes and 3 fours, was simply brutal.
Every clean strike took Heysham closer to history. The pressure of the occasion never seemed to bother him as he took the attack to Torrisholme from the very first ball. It was fearless, it was relentless and it completely took the game away from the visitors.
When your team needs a big player to stand up in the biggest moment of the season, Sam delivered. Five wickets with the ball and a breathtaking 66 with the bat. A genuine match-winning all-round performance.
Alongside him, his brother Lee Calverley played an important hand with 25 as Heysham raced to victory by eight wickets in just 12.1 overs.
The celebrations that followed were fully deserved! 🍻
A special mention must go to Dave Dixon, whose efforts behind the scenes made the day possible. After a week of challenging weather, it took a monumental effort to get the game on at Carr Lane. The hours of work put into preparing the ground ensured that play could go ahead and ultimately allowed this historic day to happen. Quite simply, without Dave's dedication, there would have been no game.
Yesterday's result however was about much more than one match. It was the reward for years of hard work across the whole club. From everyone who has pulled on a Heysham shirt, helped maintain the ground, sat on a committee, sponsored the club or supported from the boundary edge. This is a day that will live long in the memory.
History made!
Congratulations to everyone connected with Heysham Cricket Club.
Credit must also go to Torrisholme, who have been excellent all season and fully deserve their league title. Congratulations to everyone at the club on winning the championship after such a competitive season. Well played!
