Calving this year was drawn out. We put it down to a dry summer and wet winter messing with mother nature's biological bits. This is our last calf of the season out of 'Queenie', our most senior cow. She's a heifer (female). We hope to keep her for breeding eventually .

Now we have the winter barley in the shed we still have to look after it. Harvesting in the heat we need to make sure the corn is cool enough once stored. We screw in hollow spears with a motor which draws out the warm air. We move these once a day.

First load of winter barley home. What will it be used for? It's not a malting variety, so not beer. BUT it might be roasted to put colour in your Guinness or biscuits OR for pearl barley for soups OR just animal feed.

Letting the girls out early before the heat rises. Even though they have everything they need in their shed- water, food, fans, dust baths and even rehydrating minerals through the water lines, we give them extra water outside. They LOVE an open water trough.

Big surprise when checking the cameras sunday morning! 'Pearl' had given birth to a bonny heifer (girl) calf a month early. Strong, lively and suckling well. 😁

One of the challenges, in these freezing temperatures, is making sure all livestock have water. We switched the pigs to a trough. After a drink they like to play with ice cubes and blow bubbles. 😂 sound on.
