Holmfirth Forward Community Market looks ahead to a new chapter
Holmfirth Forward (HF) is looking forward to the long-awaited move to the market's new home between Huddersfield Road and Hollowgate. As questions have been raised about the location and how the market will operate, we want to explain how we reached this point.
HF was established in 2019 as a not-for-profit organisation to promote the town, support local businesses, events and community initiatives, and help secure the long-term vitality of Holmfirth. It is made up people from different groups who care deeply about the future of Holmfirth town centre and were prepared to work together on a voluntary basis to secure the town’s long-term vitality and viability
In 2020, Kirklees Council asked HF to take over the town’s market after deciding it could no longer run it and no other operator could be found. We accepted the challenge to make sure Holmfirth's historic market continued.
As plans for the Town Access Plan progressed, a temporary site was needed for the market while the Market Hall was demolished. After considering a number of sites, Kirklees decided the space between Huddersfield Road and Hollowgate was the only practical long-term option and designed it as a market, event space and car park.
Since construction began in 2023, the market has operated from Crown Bottom. Although trading has continued on the temporary site, there have been limited opportunities for growth. Despite ongoing uncertainty, we have worked hard to run and develop the market and is getting ready to transfer to the new site. Although the move approaches, some important operational issues remain unresolved.
Support for the market remains strong and some new traders with an expanded range of products are interested in joining us. The new site will accommodate around 10–12 stalls which means the market will be more varied and will complement existing town centre businesses rather than competing directly with them. It will continue to run on a Thursday morning and all day Saturday.
The market's purpose has always been to bring more people into Holmfirth, encourage them to spend longer in the town and support local businesses. While we hope to expand the market in the future, the immediate priority is to complete the move successfully and establish a thriving market worthy of Holmfirth's status as a market town.
