If resident doctors are striking over pay, why on earth aren't farmers?? They say £18.82 isn't a fair wage (I'm not dismissing that btw) but check this out for comparison:
Dairy farmers are currently being paid BELOW the cost of production for milk.
Pig farmers are forced to sell pork BELOW the cost of production.
Sugar beet, carrots, potatoes, wheat, all seem to be at terrible prices from what I hear from my fellow farmers. Many of which are also below the cost of production. There's probably far more sectors also struggling despite doing good jobs and producing 'sell-out' products.
Beef and lamb prices have been higher recently which is great but it's coming down again now. I imagine the price on the supermarket shelves won't reflect that. And the cost of production hasn't miraculously gone down, so farms have just taken an overnight pay cut.
Farms are not food banks and we shouldn't be treating them as such. This is here in the UK, in 2025. We see "fair trade" produce when we buy from other countries but we don't even have fair trade in the UK.
The market prices are wrong. Please buy direct from farmers, you can find local farmers selling direct through places like Produce & Provide
