Moving Day!!! I have been waiting for today since the end of last summer, when you may remember that this gang of gilts took up their winter residence in the 9 acre wheat field of stubble. They’ve endured the wettest conditions I can remember, but in spite of that have managed to root, clear and fertise the whole field. Lucky for them, at the same time as they moved out, we sowed a pig root mix into the old paddock and it’s been growing all winter…today was the day they finally got to enjoy it!

For any one wondering how Laurel is getting on, she’s living her best life in the Devon sunshine in a fresh field of turnips and root vegetables with a wonderful view! Ivy js about to leave her for the maternity wing!

Spring equinox this week which means that the days will very soon be longer than the night. The last time we had days this long was around 22/23 Sept!! Everyone can feel the change…

What do you do with your excess cockerels?

We hatch a lot of eggs and invariably we end up with more cockerels than any one wants so we decided a long time ago, that if they were surplus to requirements, they definitely wouldn’t go to waste.

They aren’t the most tender and they certainly aren’t loaded with breast meat like a Cobb but with the help of a crockpot we can tenderise the meat, cook 2 at a time and have enough for easy weekday meals like chicken pie or stir fry’s etc, 2 litres of outstanding chicken stock and a bowl of the skin and left overs for the dogs!
