A Difficult Post to Write 😔
A couple of weeks ago, we suffered what we strongly suspect was a dog attack on our duck flock. The injuries sustained were consistent with a dog attack. Multiple ducks had bite wounds around the tail and vent area, and one of our girls had suffered a broken neck, likely from being picked up and shaken. Sadly, her injuries were too severe to recover from.
I’ve been reluctant to share this because I don’t like posting negative content, but I feel it’s important to raise awareness.
Over the years we’ve had several close calls with dogs running through our entrance gates and making a beeline for the poultry. Each time we’ve managed to avoid disaster. Unfortunately, this time we weren’t so lucky.
Multiple ducks were attacked and, despite doing everything we could for them, we lost several birds. I was absolutely devastated. Anyone who keeps animals will understand the feeling of finding them injured and knowing there is little you can do to help them.
This post isn’t about blaming anyone or creating conflict. Most dog owners are considerate and responsible. However, it is a reminder that even the friendliest dog can act on instinct, and it only takes seconds for tragedy to occur.
We kindly ask that anyone using the public footpath through the farm keeps their dogs on a lead and under close control at all times.
Our birds are more than just livestock to us. We invest a huge amount of time, care and dedication into their welfare, so seeing them suffer in this way was heartbreaking.
Please help us prevent this from happening again by keeping dogs on leads when passing through the farm.
Thank you to everyone who respects the farm, the footpaths and the animals that call it home.
