Sally's Smallholding

Sally's Smallholding Welcome to our smallholding on 15 acres of local land in Horsham. We sell our surplus vegetables, fruit, herbs, plants, eggs and meat.

We also do seasonal flowers and a range of fruit vinegars and preserves. The fresh produce changes with the seasons. We will have eggs and preserves and some meat for sale through winter so do message us if you’d like any or to come and browse.

Our broody hen has hatched four chicks. There were five but one died unfortunately and it looked like a cream legbar girl. Her yolk sac hadn't quite finished absorbing. Very sad but that's nature for you. Two shells had completely vanished so that's a mystery. Maybe Mum ate them for the calcium or just to tidy up whilst the others hatched. Possibly a rat? It's a big year for rats and mice, annoyingly.

Anyway, this little bunch are super cute. She's a good Mum as our henpecked hands are a testament to. 😁🥰🐣🐣🐣🐣

This is Margo and Huey, not related, just both fans of a well greased bit of machinery it seems.

Maybe they like the very fashionable tattoo era we are currently enjoying and don't want to miss out. Maybe they like feeling like they've got a bit of make up on. Margo especially has excelled herself on her grease application. Looks very natural, almost like she was born black and white.

I do hope the rain and their natural lanolin will wash this off... 🫤

Open today, Friday 3-5pm and today we have some spare free range eggs, amongst other goodies. 😊

We hadn't planned on getting pigs this year, and last year we had a year off but Neil loves pigs so here are two latecomers to the Smallholding. Del and Rodney... The Trotters. Named by my friend. We laughed when she said it so the names stuck although I think Rodney (with the orange stripe) will quickly become Rodders.

Here they are just arriving, then I've got a couple of videos to post in a bit.

They came from a few miles away, so did what any pig would do, got comfy and slept throughout the journey. They were so comfy, they didn't want to get up and out of the trailor when they arrived. They soon got the hang of exploring though. They hadn't been on soil before so there are lots of fun things for piggies to explore here. 🥰🐽🐽

I had kind of decided not to grow these this year, just concentrating on broad beans this time, but having left a few pods carelessly in the corner of one of the raised beds, Mother Nature had other ideas.

These are field beans, which as I mention each year, are the baby cousin of the broad bean.

Smaller pods but tightly packed with littler beans than a broad bean, you get masses on each plant.

I think they are really rather cute. We sell them at £1 for 100g so you get a pretty big bag full for £3. They'll be around for the next few weeks on the counter top when we are open if you'd like to give them a try. I rather like adding them to a nice hot chilli. 😊

We grow lots of elder on the smallholding and each year we are planting more as the amazing elderberries make the most wonderful syrup which is a bit of a cure all for colds and mild flu type illnesses.

We have our beautiful Sambucas Nigra which is the black lace elderberry. Beautiful dark leaves and pink flowers, making the most wonderful pink elderflower cordial or champagne. I haven't made any yet this year as there simply isn't time but also I'm keeping the flowers on the plants as the berries are far more important to us.

We do have two, well established one year old potted plants left though and they are flowering right now if you want one for your garden or as a gift they are over two feet tall and are selling for £25 each.

We will be picking the first of our young broad beans this morning for those who like the tender pods as well as the beans inside. Bigger beans will be available from next week.

I also made the last batch of hawberry syrup this week so when that is gone, the next batch won't be available until autumn when the ripe berries are on the trees once more.

I would like to ask that if you pre order any of our products, please don't forget to collect or send a message to say you cannot make it. We've had several missed collections over the past few weeks and we are turning others away which isn't very fair on us or our lovely customers. We are such a small business and we take time out to manage an order book so please bear that in mind when requesting items. Thank you.

Open today, Friday 3-5pm. 😊

Mulch, people use all kind of things to keep moisture in. Chipped bark, sheeps wool, gravel, grass clippings, manure to name a few. So much can be used as a top dressing of organic matter.

We have a pile of 3-5 year old wood chip mixed with a little topsoil which we have kept and turned to make some rather good stuff. We're using it to grow our potatoes in bags as it's relatively light and full of goodness.

We do sell it by the bag if you want any sometime. Each livestock feed bag full is £5. Please pre order though as we will need to have them filled for you, and it's best to do this on a dry day as I'm sure you'd prefer your bags not to be part filled with rain water. 😊

We have been moving our chickens around into the new pens. The aim is to have purebred hatchings and fertile eggs and also to be able to manage chickens more effectively.

We put all the dark hens together, the Morans, although they do need a further sort as they are not all chocolate brown egg layers and in fact we have a white bird elsewhere who lays dark brown eggs so that's something to think about another day.

This girlie though nearly gave me a heart attack when I thought she was stuck and had practically hanged herself. On closer inspection, she had just put her head through a small gap and was trying to make it back to her original pen. 'No love, this pen is much nicer and you are staying... for now!' 😂🐓

So, whose garden, allotment or farm has just suffered in this surprise torrential storm?

Our livestock are all fine, albeit rather wet, as are we whilst running around the place to check on them. 😳⛈️🌩️🌤️🌈🐑🐝🐓
