Always easy to spot the queens I’ve raised myself, usually by the terrible marking job! A beautiful 2026 queen doing a brilliant job building a fantastic strong colony.

Little tidy up at the home apiary today. I’ve planted wildflowers all over so I like to leave as much wild as I can but when the hive entrances start to get covered it’s time for a strim. Nice job in the heavy rain as well, at least it reduces the number of bees flying and getting upset with all the noise!

One happy fluffy boy (D’artagnan) enjoying the light dusting of snow today down by the bees.

Last time opening up these hives for the year. Now just fingers crossed until Spring. All in pretty good shape though for the moment!

A very quick visit to apply an Oxalic acid (apibioxal) dribble treatment in the sun. Used to minimise the varroa mite load on the bees. Hopefully timed nicely with a broodless period (I.e no new baby bees being made) which helps to maximise the effectiveness of the treatment. The varroa mites reproduce within the cells producing the new bees so treating while there is no brood means that every mite gets hit with the treatment.

Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring compound that damages the mite while not effecting the bees. Without treatment a heavy varroa mite load can cause a range of viruses in the bees, weakening the colony or wiping them out altogether. A topic of huge debate amongst beekeepers but as with everything there are many ways to do it all and no one has all the answers.
