WHAT WAS AND WHAT MIGHT BE - this phase of the restoration of the East Range is now complete. What was a dream has now become a reality. Another, more distant, dream is to restore the building to its original format but this would require an entirely new planning application. For now though, I am content to gaze at what was, what is now and what might be.

Mulled Cyder will return for Halloween!

BRUSHING OFF - limestone is bedded onto rough laid lime mortar. Once it has dried, the surface is brushed off, level with the stone, to reveal the aggregate within. It will stay like this for the next 100 years or so when it will be inspected to see if it needs any remedial work.

Many of the lime mortars at Coulton Mill have been in situ for several hundred years.

VENTILLATION - there are multiple holes in all the agricultural buildings at Coulton Mill. These are all deliberate.

Effective ventilation has always been vital for housing livestock. It reduced moisture and humidity that can cause respiratory diseases such as pneumonia. The risk was made more acute by the tethered stalls and low ceilings of traditional buildings such as those at Coulton Mill.

It is important that the restoration reflects this context and incorporates the same structures, in this case a stack of three clay drainage pipes placed into the wall at regular intervals.

WORK CONTINUES - progress has been good rebuilding the Fold Yard boundary walls along the East Range. Months of amateur archeology and digging have preceded this and given a clear idea of the original structure and its uses.

There is something deeply joyful about recreating what was lost. To build. To create. To save. To offer to future generations an understanding of what was and what could be. Our past provides the sign posts to our future.
