Delighted to announce a new business collaboration with Rizzo The Rat, which sees an expansion to the Speakeasy empire thanks to… um… downsizing?

Parallax Punch (Vicky’s) and Red Shift (mine) at the Meteor bar, Epic Universe.

Despite the plastic cup and excessive ice I was VERY impressed with the Red Shift - a New York Sour in all but name. The wine is prominent to start, nicely spicy, before the Bourbon/lemon/honey come into focus to star at the finish. It helped that the advertised Buffalo Trace was subbed for the superior Four Roses too. And for $8 less than an relatively basic Old Fashioned? YES PLEASE.

Food for thought for my ongoing quest to nail a ‘New Yorkshire Sour’ using Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery Filey Bay whisky and a Yorkshire-based wine company - get in touch if you know of one!

Port of Call at Beak & Barrel, Magic Kingdom. Gin, ruby port, lemon juice, spiced cranberry. Very tasty but also very festive in feel thanks to the spiced cranberry element - so much so that you might find a tweaked version of this on a certain Christmas cocktail menu in a couple of months…

Lit Fuse at Beak & Barrel, Magic Kingdom - Vicky’s drink, not mine! Most unusual, this - a combination of mezcal, creme de banane, coconut water, lime and smoked chili bitters. The smokiness is upfront to start but the citrus and tropical notes really follow through on the finish - there’s a LOT going on here!

Siren’s Whisper at Beak & Barrel, Magic Kingdom.
Essentially a twist on a Daiquiri with some Blue Curacao making it stand out visually - it’s a little sweeter than some would prefer but still refreshing!

Amazing decor in this new bar though, with all sorts going on around, be it the servers mucking about as pirate crew, talking parrots or even a battle between two ships-in-a-bottle! (Can you spot the skull in the back bar?)

Chocolate Banana Bread Old Fashioned at City Works Pour House in Disney Springs. Pleasantly surprised by this - the use of the premium version of Giffard’s banana liqueur really brings out the bread-y element thanks to its rich mouthfeel, with the bitters doing enough to add a hint of chocolate-chip. Definitely something I can use as a base for a future addition to the Speakeasy menu - watch this space!

I don’t like to blow my own trumpet, but I can definitively state the Speakeasy serves better Espresso Martinis than you’ll find anywhere in Hollywood…

Lexington Bourbon Barrel Ale - I’m a sucker for any barrel-finished beer at the best of times, so trying one for the first time on vacation at my ‘home’ will no doubt add to any bias. But this was delicious regardless - dark chocolate, espresso, runny caramel and a kiss of cracked black pepper on the finish. It certainly ain’t thirst quenching in the inferno of the Florida sun by any means, but I’m willing to bet this is a banger alongside a Saltgrass fillet steak. And refills are 40% cheaper - we’re back out next May and if purple mugs are being sold instead of blue I’m looking at a spending less that trip too!
