Thank you for...

Buying from us and being patient - we've had a really busy week!

Telling others about us - lots of new faces in the last few weeks.

Supporting local businesses - we stock produce from a variety of other local small businesses.

Supporting British - we stock organic, seasonal British produce as a preference.

Supporting yourself through the food choices you make.

Supporting a fairer world - we use B Corp suppliers and chose Fairtrade products.

Minimising your impact on the environment by choosing to refill, reusing your containers, buying organic/small-scale agricultural produce.

💚

Judith is taking a few days R&R so the shop will be closed on Wednesday 27th May. Back to normal from Friday 29th.

Compost 😁.

My unmanaged pile has finally (4.5 years of waste) yielded some usable brown stuff which I've been joyfully adding to my beds!

Composting bins were one of the first site projects identified 5ish years ago and many compost bin designs have been considered and costed but nothing had come to fruition.

So in an effort to speed up composting and reduce the need for bought in compost I've built a low cost, fully compostable, compost clamp!!

A repurposed trampoline dictated the exact size and shape and a technical design approach🤣 was employed before sourcing straw bales. A local, low cost building material.

There are two bays to allow the compost to be turned and space for greens/browns to be temporarily stored before adding to the pile in appropriate quantities.

I can confirm that it's the perfect warm, airated and cosy environment so that we can close the loop - keeping resources in use.

That's got me thinking about 'closed loop', an underpinning strategy of sustainability and something our ancestors did instinctively.

What does it mean?

A rather more modern interpretation from Mr AI says.... "a self-correcting system or process where the output is fed back into the input to control or maintain the system’s performance, eliminating waste in manufacturing or ensuring precise control in technology"

For us that means closing the loop and eliminating losses on as many resources as possible.

In the shop the containers for household liquids from go back for refilling, as do the coffee tubs from and the olive oil from and the crisp tubs from crisps. And if course when you bring your container to refill you are eliminating waste.

In the market garden losses are inevitable as we sell what we grow but we're tightening the gaps with efficient composting and I've been adding rock dust to replace the essential minerals that are lost.

Happy days💚

Successful conclusion to the replacement of an essential piece of equipment and in the nick of time for these broad beans!

We predominantly use drip irrigation but we do also have an antiquated but serviceable overhead system in the greenhouse. I like to soak down the greenhouse with this a few times each year and we attempted this couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately the equally antiquated water pump decided it was time to retire!

The consensus from irragation specialists was to replace like for like but the price tag wasn't very appealing to us. Luckily we have a smart arse friend who's tinkered with ponds a fair bit and they suggested a well pump. This was an attractive option for lots of reasons, not just the much more reasonable costs.

Fast forward a fair bit of swearing to find the main outlet pipe (it goes under the greenhouse🙄) and trial and error with unusually sized connections (with thanks to ) and we have water where we need it, at good pressure and just when everything was getting a bit desperate for a drink.

I can crack on with planting now💚
