Declaring late autumn my favourite season! When mustard greens and winter radishes are thriving, chicories are adorable. I’m surrounded by stunning colours and all I’m doing now is tucking in, eating like a queen now that I have time for it and enjoying the slower, darker season….maybe even more because I know this will all be gone with a chilly cold night.
I URGE you to get hold of some winter radishes. They are my absolute favourite, much nicer than summer radish in my opinion and I keep finding batches and batches that I planted weeks ago now ready to harvest that have been hiding under the cloches.

The last big push before the frost takes it all away!
…My favourite salad mix went through the gate last week. When pea shoots, lambs lettuce and mizuna goes in the mix, it’s got to be a good one.
Tokio turnip perfection this week, radishes to follow sooon.
Red Russian flat kale being lovely. Planted very late but growing well nonetheless next to baby kohlrabies.
Purple pak Choi should be on point next week, loving the colder weather….So does the self seeded coriander everywhere.
It’s the last few weeks before quieter times. If you want to know exactly what’s on the Menü over the coming weeks, now is a good time to get in touch. Stock up before bleaker times during which I will hatching plans for next season…

Winter radish and turnip appreciation 😍 yes you can get radishes in spring, but I almost prefer their wintery versions. Slightly bigger amazing colours, smooth leafs like pak choi. These are still babies but ready to pick. They will add colour and a kick to your dishes or be lovely braised if you prefer them cooked.
From left to right: Daikon (they grow huge!)
Long black Spanish
Watermelon
Tokio turnip (milder than radishes)
China rose radish

Wk40, first week of October, season of abundance.
Flowers, biggest pumpkin, lemon grass, palla rossa, leeks getting ready, radish china rose overtaking all others in growth. They’re weedy with self seeded coriander, not the worst thing. Big batches of kale, three types, few more than least years total of three plants. The crop covers are all in use, keeping new plantings of radishes, coriander, mustards, kales, kohlrabi and winter salads safe from pigeons and wind

May my excitement about squash NEVER wear off! If I had to grow only one vegetable for the rest of my life, it would be those. Admittedly I forgot to grow some form favourites but there’s always next year right?! As the season is winding down, the field is still full! It’s the last big push for me before a well earned ‘rest’. To be honest I’ll probably be working through much of the down season but it’ll be on favour of a great setup for next year. Think processing, weighing and packing not in the rain/falling over my tools. I’m tired of this season but looking forward to the next.
My favourite crops this year have been: sweet dumpling squash, chunky fresh red spring onions, the garlic did amazingly…and strawberries. Yet to enjoy: ALL spicy leaves, mizuna & rocket, my forever favourite lambs lettuce & a range of winter radishes in all colours.
It’s not quite over yet. So make sure you make the most of my veg pickings before the next frost takes the lot x

Tomatillos. Ever had them fresh?
Get salsa ready!
