The Allotment

The Allotment The Allotment opened in 2011. Run by Hazel & Susan, their aim is to provide fresh, seasonal fruit a

As a well-known part of Innerleithen, we are proud of providing healthy, fresh produce to our local customers, many of whom we now consider as friends. We try to stock as much locally grown produce as possible and are always on the lookout for new suppliers to extend the range of food we have in store. Please feel free to request an item you particularly enjoy but have been unable to find, we are

usually able to source a surprising array of products. We always adapt to the seasons and can advise you on what is best to try and when. So whether it’s mushrooms in autumn or spring greens, your kitchen table will always be full of perfect fruit and veg. As members of the community, we try very hard to provide outstanding service. We're always keen to tell you about our products, or just have a chat. We really believe we offer an appealing atmosphere and the kind of service you've been missing. All our produce is regularly sourced from the market in Newcastle, where we go to choose the freshest and best fruit and vegetables to pass on to our customers. Local growers are bringing their surplus vegetables to us to sell, which is fantastic!

Morning everyone!

We’ll be opening shortly for Saturday morning’s normal hours and hope to see you soon.

Just a wee heads up that we’ve got a really busy Sunday with some upcoming supplier visits so we’ve made the decision to be CLOSED on Monday 31st.

Just for the one day whilst we catch up from everything - back to normal on Tuesday - but for any extra provisions you might want to collect; today will be the day.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused and look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday as normal.

We’ve gone all in with the expansion of our range of flours! Whilst we’ve carried bread and 00 flour for a while now we decided it was time for some extra variety!

We’ve now got two great brands in stock - dovesfarm and wildfarmed covering a whole range of options from pizza flour through to malt house style bread flour!

Morning! Some lovely new fennel arrived in the shop the other day so we just had to feature it today.

Not only is it a nutrient powerhouse with stacks of vitamin C, fibre and potassium, it has some great anti-inflammatory properties.

So many ways to cook this - it roasts incredibly well which mellows out the aniseed flavour, it can be eaten raw just as shavings in a salad, braised in stock and/or white wine, or even used like onion as the base of a soup!

Morning everyone!
The Victoria plums are here in force now - one of the highlights of the season for many of us.

Challenged ourselves to come up with something other than the usual jams and crumbles - and decided we’d head to Asia and go for a plum dipping sauce.

This is one of those really interesting sweet/savoury sauces that sits wonderfully with anything fried, or rich meats like duck, pork belly etc.

Really easy to make as it’s basically throw everything in a pan, simmer, blitz, and adjust at the end if it’s too sweet or too sour :)

Something a bit different just arrived this morning - if you haven’t seen these before this is a Romanesco Broccoli! Also confusingly called a Romanesco Cauliflower, just “Romanesco” or for the Italians here - “Broccolo Romanesco”.

Native to Italy, it’s actually closely related to the cauliflower and has a similar texture, but the flavour is more akin to a nuttier broccoli.

Amazing used exactly as you’d use a normal cauliflower but is particularly delicious either roasted off with salt, pepper, olive oil and perhaps some garlic, or also found in a surprising number of traditional Italian pasta dishes!

Something you might try do you think?

Those of you with herbs growing are probably inundated with ample supply as we head into August.
Here’s a great use for any excess using some of the amazing white wine vinegar we have in the shop just now.

15g of tarragon leaves harvested just this morning into a 250ml bottle of vinegar, leave it for a month and let it infuse.

Once it’s done simply strain it back out, and you have an incredible perfumed vinegar for use in salad dressings or in sauces like hollandaise.

The idea can be done with different herbs and different vinegars - we have white, red and apple cider in right now - the sky is the limit.

When life gives you lemons…..

But in this case they’re absolutely ginormous lemons!! I don’t think I’ve seen some this big in the shop for quite a while.

Lemon curd? Lemon meringue pie? Homemade limoncello? Or just a lovely slice in with a piece of fish - the options are endless!

Hope to see you all soon - open today from 10am
