It’s been a busy but good spring at Bennachie Herefords. Last weekend I delivered my 6th bull sold this spring to a continental breeder in Newburgh and, also 2 Heifers with calves at foot for a new Hereford breeder in Ellon.

Our 1st bull “Vernon” went to our local dairy Forest Farm - The Organic Dairy, my son Taylor loves to go visit Vernon - any excuse to get the best local ice cream!

The next 2 Bulls got on the boat at Aberdeen Harbour for their journey to their new homes to regular customers in Orkney - one to the mainland and one to the Isle of Sanday.

Bennachie 1 Winter, sired by Bennachie 1 Tam is off to Dinnet Farms in Royal Deeside and, Bennachie 1 Valtra, sired by Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks is off to a local continental breeder.

HEREFORDS AT GLENBERVIE

They say it’s good to make a habit of trying new things and that’s become something of a mantra for successful Aberdeenshire Hereford cattle breeder, Ian Skea.

Ian’s debut in the showring came at the tender age of six or seven when his grandfather James (Jim) Skea encouraged him to, literally, take the reins in helping to show Hereford cattle from Glenbervie Farm, Drumlithie.

And what a start it was – herd leading cow Glenbervie 1 Flora was often brought to events by Ian as a calf and, on her death after calving, Ian bottle fed her calf, which went on to be used as a commercial animal, successfully breeding among continental animals for several years. Read more at:

Vernon and Vinnie got their first pre wash and blow dry for Stirling Bull Sales. Looking forward to heading down the road with these bulls, it’s been a few years since we were at Stirling. Good for both pedigree and commercial use.

Had a great day at the Scottish Hereford Cattle Society Show at the Black Isle - my dad, brother and nephew Jamie did a great job as I couldn’t make it. Jamie managed to take home Senior Male Champion, then went on to be Reserve Male Champion with Bennachie 1 Vinny (sired by Bennachie 1 Rex). Also taking home 1st prize in the Junior Bull class was Bennachie 1 Wizard (sired by Solpoll 1 Lawman).

A good day out with our team of Herefords at our local Banchory Show. My bull calf Bennachie 1 Wizard won champion in AOB class. Also well done to Jamie my nephew who helped me show on the day and won 2nd in the young handlers

Dad and I had a great trip to Balbuthie Farm on Sunday and was delighted to be awarded...

🏆 the Scottish Hereford Breeders Association Small Herd of the Year 🏆

I was also pleased to win 2nd prize for Bennachie 1 Vintage in the Bull calf class and I also received 3rd place for my new senior stock Bull Solpoll 1 Nobility. All in all a great day!

A wee spring update - ❄️ Bennachie 1 Taggart is off to his new home, a local suckler herd. We will miss this guy, he is a son of Square-D Tortuga. Also in the last few weeks we welcomed 2 new calves sired by Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks, happy with how they are coming along! Taylor is also happy because he got his first Hebridean lamb this week, and he is now on full time lambing duty! 👍

Sad to see this guy go - I’ve been using him as my junior stock bull but he’s off to a good home at Finzean Estate in Royal Deeside. Bennachie Rex is another son of Bennachie Masterman who has been consistently breeding big strong long bulls. Here’s a few photos of Rex’s first calves and another 5 are due to calve by the end of the year. We wish him all the best in his new home!

A wee wander round the herd today - this is a homebred heifer sired by Bennachie 1 Masterman and due to calve in the back end to Haroldsons Title Shot. Also a wee bull calf coming along nicely sired by a homebred bull Bennachie 1 Rascal

Another weekend of deliveries - firstly two yearling heifers to a loyal customer up in Banff. I’m always pleased to see and hear how their Hereford herd is doing and nice to see them progress and grow! Was also happy to deliver a bull and a cow and calf to a new customer Gordon Bruce at Turriff - we wish all our customers all the best with their new additions!

Bennachie 1 Rooster off to his new home at Inverbervie - looks like he will be happy with these 35 heifers (HEx AAx). It’s nice to see his new home is only a stone throw away from where my Hereford venture began with my grandad 30 years ago - we wish him all the best in his new home!

It’s been a long wait since I bought Rempstone 1 Tessa as a 6 month old heifer at the Designer Genes Sale. She has grown well and delighted she has had her first bull calf sired by a homebred bull Bennachie 1 Rex

Myself and George Harvey had a great day on the Hereford Cattle Society stand at Scotland’s Beef Event. Thanks to everyone who came to see us - it was great to see there was so much interest from those who already have Herefords to those looking to start up with the breed. It was great to promote the Hereford breed in such a commercially dominated area in the North East of Scotland. Thanks also to Iain Mathers of Wardes for providing the Simmental heifers with Hereford calves at foot, and also to Neil Barclay of Harestone Livestock for providing a Hereford stock bull.

It's great to be back in the show ring this year - we have had great success with Bennachie 1 Masterman who was Champion in the any other breed class at Echt show. He was also best animal bred by exhibitor outwith the overall champion. He created a lot of interest around the show ring!
