Order at http://www.cottagefarmorganics.co.uk/meat-products/ and we will deliver to your door without costing the Earth! We believe we are one of the first truly sustainable farms in the UK, that is farming organically, but without using fossil fuels and still utilising machinery and energy. As a result our organic meat will cost you less than chemical meat from supermarkets or butchers. The best place to read more on that is at www.TransitionNC.org (click on Food Producers Directory and look up Cottage Farm). Cottage Farm is an organic, sustainable, resilient, carbon-sink farm powered by renewable energy with near zero use of fossil fuels, as far as I can find out, the first in the country. We bought Cottage Farm back in August 2005, not having had any prior farming experience at all - soon after I learned about Peak Oil. Our aim was to establish a resilient food producing business with a zero carbon footprint and zero use of external energy, serving our local community. Having converted the farm to organic status, established a herd of local rare breed Red Ruby cattle and a herd of native rare breed Wiltshire Horn sheep, we now supply our neighbours and customers nationwide with fresh beef and lamb boxes. When delivering our boxes, we use carbon neutral means of transport and reusable packaging. At the same time we have also completed the conversion of our house to less than zero carbon footprint, reducing our carbon footprint from 7 tonnes CO2/year to –0.7 tonnes CO2/year, representing a decrease by 110%. Systems used include solar thermal, wood burner with a back boiler and wood stove, a heat store for hot water and central heating, PV panels, wind turbine, bore hole water and others. All the wood we use for heating is home grown on the farm. In addition, we also produce our own 100% bio-diesel from waste vegetable oil, which we use to run our car, Landrover and the farm tractor, and to deliver our meat boxes. That means that all the work done on the farm and all our deliveries as well as our general lifestyle and driving is almost completely CO2 free. Of course, as an organic farm, we also sequester some 100+ tons of carbon annually. We market our organic produce as Fieldpower Organics, through which we deliver organic produce from Cottage Farm and later also from other local organic farms, nationwide by overnight courier and to London addresses by carbon neutral transport – www.bigbarn.co.uk/marketplace/vendors/Cottage . As a member of the Tamar Organic Farmers group, we continually research new farming methods to increase general farming resilience in the face of ever decreasing supplies of energy, greater risk of draughts and to substitute for conventional farming, when that collapses, as is increasingly likely. Our method of innovative organic grass fed meat production is already cheaper than that produced by conventional farming, which is why our prices are lower than either supermarket or butcher prices.
