British Simmental Cattle Society

British Simmental Cattle Society We are the British Simmental Cattle Society

British Simmental cattle, whose origins go back several hundred years to the Simmen valley in Switzerland, were first introduced into the UK in 1970. Since then the breed has grown to be the 4th largest beef breed in the UK and leads the way on the promotion of health in beef breeding cattle. Simmental cattle are probably the most genuine “dual” purpose breed that can be crossed successfully with

any other breed and produce cows which are extremely milky, fertile, docile and with great natural mothering instincts. The breed also possesses tremendous terminal genetics, with excellent growth rates and daily live weight gains of in excess of 2kg/day achievable in an intensive beef finishing system (varied results between heifers, steers and bulls). With farmers seeking to run lower input systems and find ways of reducing costs, Simmental cattle are further increasing in popularity due to their ability to rear a calf on milk and not on concentrates. Coupled with high growth rates and carbon efficiencies, the breed offers a competitive edge and increased profitability in the present climate.

🔥🌞SOPHIE’S ‘UNIQUE’ SIMMENTAL COW HAS TRIPLET HEIFER CALVES!🌞🔥

😀Sophie Edge, 13, ‘over the moon’ as Luckylady delivers an 800,000-1 triplet birth.😀

⭐️⭐️⭐️We’ve got a cracking story for you tonight with news reaching Simmental headquarters of triplets being born in the Unique herd of one of the Society’s youngest members, Sophie Edge, 13, who lives at Charwood Farm, Marton, Baschurch, Shropshire with her mum and dad, Susan and Tristan, and her younger sister Bethany.⭐️⭐️⭐️

👌👉Starting at the beginning and the Edge’s purchased Forsdale Anemones Luckylady (P) in 2023 from breeders Chris & Kath Martindale, Coedfa, St Martins, Oswestry, after she was picked out by Sophie.

🟠Already having had twins previously, Sophie was delighted when Lucklady was scanned in calf again in December and with what was thought to be further twins.

💥Rolling on to last week and the 1st of September, Sophie and the family were amazed to find that Luckylady had given birth to three healthy heifer calves and obviously with no assistance.

🎯So, the odds of a cow having triplets are by common veterinary estimate, around 100,000-1. The probability of all of the calves being the same s*x jumps the odds to a remarkable 800,000-1
Needless to say, Sophie and her sister Bethany just love these remarkable ‘super Simmental’ triplets and have named them Tia, Tilly, and Tiffany. The calves were born on the last day of the school summer holidays, so Sophie certainly has had some exciting news to tell all of her teachers and school friends.

🙂👍A super excited Sophie said: “I was really happy when I knew Lucklady was pregnant again but just couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw there were three calves! I’m able to have a quick check on them in the morning and go and see them when I get home.”
What a memorable day for Sophie and the family, and a fantastic start for her Unique Simmental herd. The intent from here is that all three heifer calves will be pedigree registered with the Society. See here the pictures of Sophie and Bethany with the triplet Simmental heifer calves, sired by Burlane Kensington, and with all of them clearly thriving!

🔴🐂2020 born, Forsdale Anemones Luckylady (P) is by Wroxall Cocker-Leeky-Soup 11 (PP), and is out of Forsdale Anemone, a Blackford Mischief daughter. Breeder Chris Martindale is of course the Society’s President and speaking of these Unique triplets he said: “Kath and I were so delighted for Sophie when we heard about the triplets. Sophie texted us the morning they were born and she’s keeping us informed with regular updates. When the family came to have a look around it was Sophie who picked out Luckylady as the one she wanted. It looks like she’s certainly living up to her name”!

🏵️Whilst triplets are rare, let alone triplets of the same s*x, there have been a few instances in British Simmental in this last couple of years. Only last year, Denizes Trixi Belle 15 ‘wowed’ the crowds on the summer show circuit when she was shown with her three heifer calves at foot, and won the Overall Individual Interbreed at the Great Yorkshire Show.

🟠🎯MATURE SIMMENTAL COWS WITH THEIR SPRING BORN CALVES AT KILBRIDE FARM, BALLYCLARE!🟠🎯

🇬🇧We’re continuing our little snap shot video tour of Simmental herds around the United Kingdom.

👌Tonight we’ve headed back over to Northern Ireland and with a minute or so long video of Simmental cows with their spring born calves at foot in the highly noted Kilbride Farm herd of the Robson family at Doagh, Ballyclare, Co Antrim.

‼️The consistent theme of these videos is showing some quality Simmental cows with tremendous temperament, having loads of milk, and doing a great job of some strong, growthy calves.

💯The Kilbride Farm herd comprises just short of 100 breeding pedigree cows, with half calving in the spring, from the end of March, and the rest between August and October. The Robsons run a commercial system and the cows are ‘not pampered in any way’. They are housed on slats through the winter and they need to be very structurally sound to hold up to those conditions. The cows are naturally fleshed so they are cheap to keep over the winter. The spring calves are speaned when they come in, at six to seven months old, with the early autumn-born calves speaned in April when they go out to grass and the later autumn ones kept on the cow until June.

🔴Commenting on the breed previously Norman Robson said: “My father first got into Simmentals because he could see the potential of the breed and the opportunities for the breed to progress have never been greater.”

💥“The Simmental breed brings performance benefits to all types of farming systems – no other breed has the flexibility of the Simmental; from crossing on a Luing cow on the hill, to high output lowland suckler herds and as a crossing sire onto the dairy herd.”

👏👉Another top video of Simmental cows and calves in their working clothes. Keep an eye on Simmental Facebook as we continue to tour the country with these snapshot videos. There’s more to Simmental!

☀️🟠SIMMENTAL COWS AND CALVES AT THE PETTIT’S SPEY BAY HERD, MORAYSHIRE!☀️🟠

👌We’ve been touring round the country to bring you a few videos of Simmental herds in their working clothes.

🐂👉Today we’re having a pit stop at the Spey Bay herd of Richard Pettit, The Den, Den Farm, Fochabers, Morayshire. Showing in the video is a mix of commercial Simmental X cows, and with a few pedigree cows in with them. The calves shown are mainly February and March born.

💥The commercial cows were all synced last year and AI’d to Bighill Parker and with the progeny mainly being the re calves in the video. The paler coloured calves are by herd sire Islavale Klaus, a Shacon Hannibal 16 (ET) EX 94 son. Another top herd of Simmental cows with super temperaments making a great job of their calves.

🎯Also in the video is the young heterozygous polled bull Auchorachan Revolver (P), a Coose Nebraska son who was purchased for 7000gns at Stirling in October last year.

🫵At Den Farm, steer calves are sold at around 12 months and any surplus heifers suitable for breeding are sold privately off farm to a repeat buyer.

🙂Thank you for your feedback on these videos and keep an eye on Simmental Facebook for further herds being featured.

🔴🏵️TREVERBYN ROXI WINS THE SIMMENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP AT 157TH BUCKS COUNTY SHOW!🏵️🔴

⚡️We’re just picking off some of the last shows of the summer season and today we’re turning to the 157th staging of the Bucks County Show, Weedon, Nr Aylesbury, held on 27th August.

💥Winning the Simmental Championship was the two-year-old in-calf heifer Treverbyn Roxi from Ant Hart, Carloggas Farm, St Austell, Cornwall. February 2024 born Roxi is by Skylark Geronimo, and is out of Coose Nicole 2nd. Bucks County marked a second Simmental Championship in the year with a win previously secured at Cheshire Show. Roxi is in-calf to the well known AI Sire Blackford galaxy and is due to calf in the spring of next year.

🌞Treverbyn Roxi first came to prominence last year when on her first ever show outing she secured the Simmental Overall Reserve Supreme, and Female Championship awards at the 2025 Royal Welsh Show!

👏Well done to Ant Hart on this latest win with another quality pedigree Simmental heifer! 👏

🏵️🏆‘SPECIAL’ SIMMENTAL HEIFER BRANDANE SAVANNAH WINS AT EDENBRIDGE & OXTED SHOW!🏆🏵️

🎯Finishing the show season in style the May 2025 born heifer Brandane Savannah from Jimmy McMillan, Chesham, Buckinghamshire won the Simmental Championship, followed by the Junior Interbreed Championship at Edenbridge & Oxted Show on 30th & 31st August!

💥Described as a ‘special’ young heifer, Brandane Savannah is by Sterling Gino 15 and is out of Sterling Candy’s F.C.U.K. who has previously bred the 18,000gns Brandane Lu Lu sold at Next Gen in 2022, and Brandane Millie who was the Overall Simmental Supreme, and Reserve Individual Interbreed at the Royal Welsh in 2023.

‼️One very much for your diaries, Brandane Savannah will be aimed at the Simmental Next Gen VI Sale being held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on December 11th this year. 📌‼️

🎖️Building up a fair old show CV, Brandane Savannah’s titles this year include: Overall Junior Champion, and Junior Heifer Champion at the Simmental English National Show (Royal Norfolk); Overall Interbreed Champion, and Simmental Champion, at both Hadleigh, and Suffolk Shows, and now Simmental Champion and Junior Interbreed Champion at Edenbridge & Oxted Show.

👌Judging the Simmental classes at Edenbridge was Julie Rooks, with Brian Wills judging the Interbreed. 👏So it’s a big well done to Jimmy McMillan and with Brandane Savannah being a heifer not too miss at the Next Gen VI Sale on 11th December at Carlisle! ❗️

16 SIMMENTAL BULLS FOR SALE AT INCHEOCH’S WORKING GENES SALE, 8TH SEPTEMBER

“Functional, fertile cattle, structurally sound for longevity, and with good temperament will never go out of style”

The ninth Working Genes Bull Sale, hosted by the McGowan family, Incheoch Farms, Aylth, Blairgowrie, takes place one week today on 8th September.

See the catalogue here and with all the details of the bulls and the sale. You can attend on the day and see the bulls but the sale is on-line, silent auction by Yourbid. There’s also a further viewing day, 3rd September 3pm-8pm.
https://www.incheochfarm.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/bull-catalogue-26.pdf?fbclid=IwY2xjawUDgklwZG9mAWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAGJyaWQRMWdjR2ZYNGZOcmFDNGJKMEJzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeGP16tuHnfr-RKgo_x-bTo6boAt2qSPNAdppt-uaHPv4DpvAtxdSALpWD1k4_aem_ofJIISmp4PW0sHxPRGjrYg

Here’s a quote from the McGowans on their Simmental bull breeding philosophy:

“Robust bulls, bred from Functional, Efficient cows has been our goal for many years now. We run just over 200 pedigree, performance recorded cows, and select hard for fertility, structural soundness, good temperaments and easy calving. We find that easy-fleshed, medium framed cattle with a bit of maternal character tend to be the ones who tick the boxes—and we think the bulls we have on offer today can transfer these traits to your herd.”

Also with this video post, see some of the bulls for sale and with Neil McGowan giving you some breeding background.

♦️⭐️WROXALL SIMMENTALS – BREEDING TOMORROW’S CATTLE TODAY⭐️♦️

🎯Our series of breeders advertisements sees us turn too the noted and longstanding Wroxall Pedigree herd of Rob, Sam & Josh Evans, Kington Grange Farm, Claverdon, Warwickshire.

💪Featured in the advert is the homozygous polled herd sire Coose Pat (PP).

💥What does the breeder say about the Simmental breed: “Simmental is the dual-purpose breed that ticks all the boxes. After more than half a century of breeding experience, we know that the Simmental cow has both the frame and the ability to naturally breed and rear a strong calf, she will produce an abundance of milk off fairly ordinary forage, her calf will grow to half her bodyweight – 400kg or more at weaning without any supplementary feed, and then go on to finish off a good forage diet with little or no hard feed cost.”

🟠⚡️SPRING CALVING SIMMENTAL COWS FROM THE BREAGHEY HERD LOOKING TOP NOTCH!⚡️🟠

🌍We’re ‘on tour’ at the moment around the UK and just bringing you what we think are video clips of some typical but high-quality Simmental cows and calves from different herds.

👉Tonight we’re jumping across the water and featuring the Breaghey pedigree herd of Andrew and Zara Clarke in County Armagh, Northen Ireland.👈

🎯Front and centre are the Breaghey Simmental cows enjoying some lush grass after a few days of rain.

💥This batch of spring calving cows are running with the herd’s homebred junior stock bull Breaghey Super Mario (shown in the video). This young bull is by Kilbride Farm Marvel and is out of Breachey Vida M427, an Omorga Isaac daughter. Super Mario is in the breed’s top 1% for both Terminal Production, and Self Replacing Indexes.💥

💯We can see it here again in this top video but Simmental females, both pedigree and commercially, bring you oceans of milk, calving ease, docility, fertility and longevity, and crossed with any breed of sire produce fast growing, easy fleshing progeny with tremendous weaning weights. 🟥👌YOUNG SIMMENTAL COWS AND CALVES AT THE GOLDIES, NEWBIEMAINS!👌🟥

🙂Just moving round the country and we like to give you little tasters of pedigree Simmental herds with these snapshot videos.

⭐️Tonight’s video is from the noted 150 cow Newbiemains herd of Jim & Patricia Goldie, Newbiemains Farm, Annan, Dumfriesshire in the South West of Scotland.

🎯Featuring some young breeding females, most of the cows shown are 24-28 months old, and with their June and July born calves.

❗️The calves are sired by predominantly by Grangewood Paddington, Hiltonstown Lorenzo, and Auchorachan Picasso.

👇Established some 20 years ago, here’s a comment from Jim Goldie last year as he reflected on the development of the Newbiemains herd and the changes within the breed as a whole over two decades:

💥“It was the dual-purpose aspect that really attracted us to the breed in the first place, and we definitely felt that the breed hadn’t yet reached its full potential. We knew they could produce a good, milky female, and we saw it as a challenge to try and breed more shapely bulls, while maintaining that milkiness. The breed has improved a lot, especially in the last 10 years; the bulls have more shape and better weight gain.”

❤️We love these ‘from the field’ videos and keep an eye on Simmental Facebook as we continue to profile herds and give you a little look at what’s going on in herds around the UK. There's more to Simmental!
