Derwent Flock

Derwent Flock Breeding quality registered pedigree rare and native breeds including Shetland,Teeswater, Clun Forest

The flock is owned and managed by three generations of our family. Dancing Gate Farm is home to the Derwent Flock and is situated in beautiful, peaceful surroundings in the Lake District below the Skiddaw range, just before the Dodd Wood area, about two miles from Keswick town centre. It has magnificent views towards the Grizedale and Causey Pike ranges, Newlands valley, Borrowdale, Cat Bells,

Walla Crag and the Helvellyn range. Our sheep graze on a mixture of lush pasture and marshy fen that make up the flood plain for the river Derwent as it flows from Derwentwater to Bassenthwaite. The Derwent Flock share the farm with Sue and Kev’s commercial sheep and cattle.

He's absolutely right about them being amazing sheep, been breeding them out of our Shetlands now for four years and can't fault them. Ours mostly have twins, lambed and suckled before you can blink, great mothers and lambs grow on really well πŸ‘πŸ‘

Remember Norman, our Lleyn tup lamb purchased last autumn?
He's really grown on well and now standing head and shoulders above all his Shetland yearling mates! Some cracking lambs too out of both Shetland ewes and our commercial hoggs

Native sheep breed fleeces protecting our newly planted native species hedgerows on the farm - Herdwick, Ryelands, Jacob, Clun forest, Shetland, Teeswater, Black Wensleydale, Cheviot and Torwen Welsh mountain fleece all doing their bit to help with w**d suppression and moisture retention while the plants establish. We planted around 1000m, some 6000 plants, during the last 6 months and these will provide much needed shelter belts for livestock, wildlife corridors for smaller mammals and insects, food and pollen for birds and bees and also help in preventing run off during very wet periods.
