Derwent Flock Breeding quality registered pedigree rare and native breeds including Shetland,Teeswater, Clun Forest

The flock is owned and managed by three generations of our family. Dancing Gate Farm is home to the Derwent Flock and is situated in beautiful, peaceful surroundings in the Lake District below the Skiddaw range, just before the Dodd Wood area, about two miles from Keswick town centre. It has magnificent views towards the Grizedale and Causey Pike ranges, Newlands valley, Borrowdale, Cat Bells, Walla Crag and the Helvellyn range. Our sheep graze on a mixture of lush pasture and marshy fen that make up the flood plain for the river Derwent as it flows from Derwentwater to Bassenthwaite. The Derwent Flock share the farm with Sue and Kev’s commercial sheep and cattle.

Great day at the Teeswater sale on Saturday
Very proud of Derwent Harlow, winning the shearling class, breed champion and best fleece, and going on to sell to Gerard for his Mayfield flock.
Derwent Gideon also won the aged ram class and Derwent Hanley was 4th in the shearling ram class.
All our tups sold and we wish everyone the very best of luck with them. Thanks to judge David Wallis, and to auctioneers Jack and Kenton for running a great sale, and to Amy Edwards for your help.

We always love a trip to Masham Sheep Fair! This year we went on Thursday and spent Friday at the delightful Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal water garden. Saturday we watched the teeswaters being judged and just enjoyed being spectators - a nice change from rushing about showing sheep ourselves! Delighted to see Derwent Fernando win the aged ram class for Emily and Sam. We took some fleece which sold well. Saturday evening when the square was quiet again we enjoyed fish and chips and then a few beers with Janet and Charles at the local pub 🍻 - can also thoroughly recommend the spirit of Masham rhubarb gin 👌
And who knew that Torwens were known as the Monks' Sheep centuries ago 🧐 (until black wool became undesirable/unfashionable)
It's a fabulous weekend with something for everyone and all for charity too 👏👏
Now back home and back to sheep prep for the next sale!
