How wonderful seeing the full formation of the Red Arrows flying directly over our house this afternoon on their return home from the Trooping of the Colours for King Charles' Birthday celebrations. Unfortunately didn't have time to photograph but here is their route home. x

Farm cat Pookie joined us at 8 years old as a last chance home as she was too "vicious" she couldn't be placed elsewhere. She quickly became a very affectionate cat once she no longer had the pressures of a household to cope with, but that was 8 years ago. She always looked so young, so I hoped she would live forever but she is now 16 and she has started to show her age. Her hearing has almost gone, she is no longer following me around the paddocks and she is sleeping a lot more and needs waking for food. She is a very old lady now and I have to prepare myself, I think but I know the later 8 years she has spent on the reindeer farm have been full of fun and if we hadn't taken her she would have been pts - she really was a horror when she joined us, all teeth and claw :)

Oh I do miss Boris.
A memory from 2018. He had been tethered to that gate for grooming, as you can see from all that hair but once I had had enough, I let him loose. He galloped off around the paddock and came back to grooming area, leaping in the air. - this was his second or third lap of paddock, repeating the silly leap in grooming area... 3 acre paddock, he had no need to run in this area but he did many times! :) Intelligent, silly, fun loving, beasties. :)

Just a chicken update but one that is making me so happy.
I had a serious fox kill a few weeks ago of my free ranging hens. The only survivours were a broody Sussex (sitting on nothing), a gold laced Pekin who luckily for her was laying an egg in nest boxes and 2 cockerells who flapped into hedge, but the rest were slaughtered around the field at midday.
Pekins are my heart chooks and I had brought in many interesting colours. On the day of fox attack I had 9 Pekin eggs but they had not been prepped for hatching (turned daily) but I Hoped and put them under the Sussex broody. She has sat well but on Thursday she stood on one with an embryo in, she is heavy compared with the eggs and wasn't too hopful for a hatch BUT tonight two have hatched and maybe more by morning. Still the worry that she'll tread on them but where there is life, there is hope. ;) xx

Big day for the babies today. All now have piercings, their (ear tags) :( and have their baby head collars.
As they are becoming more independant from their mothers, I needed to be able to recognise who is Monty and who Basil, as they are so similar atm.
So Monty is in a red head collar, Basil in darkish blue, George in pale blue and Aurora in pink. Not great photos, I'll try for better over the weekend.
They have settled quite well with the extra weight in their ears and something around their heads. Only the odd head shake.
Thank you Lewis and Alice for your assistance "rugby tackling" the babies and holding them still. x

Alpacas have had their new hairdos from the brilliant clipper Ben. He did say to mention if I posted online that he hadn't missed bits! The old girls have intentionally been left with fleece on their backs as they struggle to keep weight on with their age. They should have enough fleece off to keep them cooler in Summer but will go into Winter with more covering to keep them warm. Old alpacas don't grow the quality of coat to see them through Winter. We will monitor to see how the Summer goes but for now Beatrix and Diamond are clipped out but old girls Dacota and Floss (aka Fleur) have a partial clip. :)
Thank you Ben

Alpacas are booked in for a "short back and sides" tomorrow. The very old ladies, Dakota and Floss will retain fleece over their backs as they are not carrying much weight, so that warmth over back should help them get through Winter. ;)
Younger girls, Diamond and Beatrix are carry a little too much weight. They are on a diet and will be clipped out. ;) Pics of new haicuts tomorrow.

When we had the massive fox kill of chickens, we were left with two orphaned Pekin chicks who have had to come home for heat. They are growing well but thinking both cockrells! :(
All but one Pekin were killed so I put 9 Pekin eggs under a Sussex that was broody but not too hopeful as those eggs hadn't been turned to prep for hatching. Fingers crossed as I love my little Pekin bantams

We will have two brown boys (Monty and Basil), white girl (Aurora) and Gorgeous George available in the Autumn once weaned. Available to 5* homes only. All are now daily stroked at feeding time, they will have head collar training shortly, so should be easy adults if training kept up.
When you breed livestock they either go to a new farm for breeding/show stock (not meat in UK for reindeer thankfully) but it is always hard to plan who will move on. :( Please message if you think you have that perfect home.
