Without the lowest of winter light there wouldn't be these shadows of the land of the past, both wild and human.

Without razor clear winter air we wouldn't look and see for miles. I can see in perfect detail the white lighthouse on Flat Holm Island,Ynys Echni, the southern most point of Wales.

Without the rare blue winter sky making you look up at the miracle of it, you wouldn't see wheeling gullies of gulls and massing, sweeping, hoards of starlings where land meets sea.

Without the winter wind the waves wouldn't come, full of ray for the fishing and molluscs for the birds.

Without the low winter tides there wouldn't be the shriek of the reshanks. The serenity of the shelducks, the Gadwalls from Iceland, the Dunlins from Russia.

We are told a new year dawns. We are told to start consuming spring. But nature tells me winter is still here and not to rush towards its finish line. Not yet. Not on a day like today.

A round up from the first frosty week of winter here on the coast. We have hardy breeds of sheep, goats and cattle that overwinter outdoors. They forage and dig themselves deep into the scrub and heather if the weather turns. This winter grazing is incredibly important in keeping the grassland full of a diverse mix of plants that support nature across this extraordinarily beautiful place ❤️

Moving the ram lambs but make it a 3km scramble. I (Beth) calling them along, Oscar bringing up the stragglers, Eve riding on ahead with all the fencing and Joel encouraging our youngest son along with promises of the small stone beach at the end. Wait for the moment the lambs sense the sea for the first time in their lives 🥹. And did they stay long in their new location? No they promptly escaped. The last clip is Joel at 5am in the morning during this week's storm...bringing them home...again....

Post dawn, when all the animals have been checked and both my ears have dropped off from the wind chill on the quad and forgetting my hat, i feel such a pull to walk up to this point on the land.

Bronze age peoples would have seen the dawns here as i have. They would watched the stars receed, the sun and the tides and tended to the wild and the domestic alike. That link stretching across the ages feels like a steady peacefulness flowing underneath my small life stresses.

My oldest son is fascinated by the Vikings that sailed up this channel of water, making for the Severn river. He imagines the excitement. I imagine what the people standing in this spot would have been thinking when they saw the ships from above.

Anyway, morning rade, i mean livestock checks, over and out.
