Good Morning

You probably don’t need me to remind you but tomorrow is Mothers Day (the most important woman in your life….she thinks) Well you’re too late to book a table at her favourite restaurant and a bunch of petrol station flowers doesn’t really hit the spot.

So why not dine out at home? We have the perfect centrepieces for a family meal at home. Extra large chickens which almost anyone can turn into a simple roast dinner, steaks and roast meat (we can advise on full cooking instructions) A nice bottle of wine, no rubbish now, and you’ve cracked it.

To finish we’ve even thought of this for you. Yesterday we took delivery of a full range of the Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding products. Nip in to the Forum Cafe for some ice cream and you’ve cracked the pudding as well.

There that wasn’t too painful was it?

Also yesterday we had another delivery two days late, because of the weather sixty kilos of Charles McLeod’s Stornaway Black Pudding. This will sit proudly beside our Ayrshire black pudding. This is in order to celebrate National Black Pudding Day on the 18th of March but I bet you all knew that.

Enjoy your weekend and make sure you spoil your maw. You only get one. 🌺

Good Evening and a Happy National Book Day. I bet you knew that. Much more importantly this is British Pie Week. How do they think them up?

An old established local pie maker Shorts Pies has retired. They will be much missed. Shorts of Irvine and for the last forty years of Kilmarnock who were known far and wide for their quality Scotch pies. I can still taste the pastry.

We have decided to enter the Scotch Pie market. What better time to launch it than British Pie Week. It’s a very well filled product using our own meat and William Sword’s Pastry. They are very good but I fear I’ve gone up a size and had to put another notch in my belt. This testing of products is exhausting.

We will have our full range of pastry products on display from tomorrow. These include: steak pies, hand held steak pies, cowboy pies, chicken curry pies, including mini ones and sausage rolls. This list does not include the pie that dare not speak its name in case there are any lawyers reading this but we will have plenty of these as well.

I haven’t forgotten gluten free pie lovers. We do a gf and an individual gf steak pie as well as gf sausage rolls but it’s helpful if these are ordered.

Enjoy reading a book and always say ‘Aye to a pie’ 🥧

Good evening

As we slide peacefully towards the end of the first Friday the 13th of the year we have much to look forward to. Love appears to be in the air and tomorrow’s the 14th which is Valentine’s Day.

I like Valentine’s Day as the days are that wee but longer. It was crisp this morning and the view of Arran was staggeringly beautiful. This brings me back to Valentine’s Day. We’ve all had staggeringly beautiful dates or partners and I reckon you’re better dining out at home.

For the last few years we have done a Valentine’special and this year is no exception. For only £25 you can get two superb Scotch sirloin steaks and a Cartmel sticky toffee pudding for two. If you’re feeling especially lucky and you hope to have a breakfast to cook we will even throw in two slices of sausage, 4 pork links and a packet of tattie scones. Just ask for the Valentine special while stocks last. Not to your taste? We have Chinese pork love hearts as well❤️

As I’ve said above we’ve brought in a small range of puddings from the Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Company.

I’ve kept what I think is the best to the last, Tomahawk Steaks. We have been nursing and maturing these bad boys for over six weeks. They are in superb condition and will feed two comfortably. I only hope there’s one left for my birthday tea on Sunday.

Have a fantastic and romantic weekend. 🥰❤️🥩🥂

Good evening

Is it really just a month since the festive season? I’m glad to say that I have got over that vision when I close my eyes I see steak pies. Hundreds of them.

But move on we must and this weekend marks the Bard’s anniversary. So we come to haggis. The window in the shop is full of them, all sizes available at time of writing. The boys are hoping to make their haggis pies and haggis towers. If you just want a wee taste we also sell the beast by the slice. For the poor souls who can’t face it we even have a vegetarian haggis.

By the weekend we hope to have a little venison on sale. A lot of it has been ordered but we should have venison burgers and venison sausages along with some diced venison.

If you’re going to or having a Burns Supper have a great weekend.

Good evening

Last day of another year tomorrow. Boy has it flown in but then they all do nowadays.

Our wee shop aka the Tardis is stappit fou with steak pies, all shapes and sizes. We ran out of steak pies last year, I assure you we won’t this year. No need to phone I’m sure there will be enough for everyone.

New line. We have been asked quite often if we do Tomahawk steaks. Yes indeed we do being one of the few bone in butchers left. If you like a meat treat we have a few of these bad boys that are at least forty days aged on display tomorrow.

This will be probably the last post of the year so as they say somewhere …..
LANG MAY YOUR LUM REAK!

Good evening

I call it the Strictly effect. It comes on and I go to sleep on the chair. My wife who knows about these things said I managed to get 3 hours 20 minutes before she felt she had to wake me.

Well that was one Saturday! Really really busy with lots of new faces and customers who are finding us for the first time. I hope they enjoy our product and patter and return for more.

I forgot to mention yesterday some items we do not stock regularly. Packets of beef dripping ideal for real chips and roast potatoes, ox cheeks for slow cooking, fresh ox kidney for soup or to add to a steak pie (my granny made a magnificent kidney soup and I can still taste it. Regrettably both she and the recipe left us 50 years ago). One or 2 enquiries about venison yes we do have a little although most of it is ordered.

A little known fact about our business is we do meat vouchers. These are the perfect present if you are stuck for a gift idea. Any amount is redeemable in the next six months.

As Iain and Arran are going to be very busy tomorrow, Sunday, I feel I should go in and help them. To this end the shop will be open tomorrow. If you’re out and about please come in and interrupt my reading of the Sunday papers and my drinking of cold coffee.

No rant but I think EAC spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on a Traffic Management Scheme a few years ago. Why does John Finnie Street look like a car park with very slow movement of cars?

Good evening

First a list of what we have.

Chicken livers the product that everyone can’t find in the supermarkets. This can cause a mini panic on Christmas Eve.

Cartmel puddings. We have the full range all well dated.

Belfast hams. We have taken delivery of probably the finest gammons I have seen. We have started slicing them as bacon and steaks and we can prepare them to any size for baking.

Popes eye steak aged for at least 40 days…….superb.

3 x 5 kilo Kellybronze turkeys. We had an add on to our order.

Now what we haven’t got.

Gluten Free.

Thank you all very much for ordering in advance and before the deadline. This made production a piece of cake (a gf one obviously). The same rules will apply to gf steak pies for the New Year.

We had two customers in today who didn’t know where we were.
For the benefit of those who don’t know we are half way up on the right hand side of John Finnie Street just after where the Christmas lights stop and just before they start again. 🤷🏼‍♂️ What does anyone think about the wee hungry looking Christmas tree on the old Mothercare site 🤦🏼‍♂️

12/12/2025

Greetings or should it be Festive Greetings!

Thanks to all those who ordered their gluten free orders by the cutoff date. For those who were a bit late we will do our very best to supply you too.

This is the season when the shop’s not big enough. We have our biggest order of the year coming from Stornaway. Charles McLeod Stornaway black pudding see seems to touch the spot in this area.
Although I do think our own Ayrshire black pudding is pretty good too. As usual we’ll have a few gluten free Stornaways.

All our festive beef, lamb and pork is maturing nicely. Just let us know if you want something special weight or size wise. This specially applies to our Belfast gammon joints on or off the bone.

As per normal please call into the shop to discuss your requirements and personalise your order.

I hope everyone’s preparations are going well. I’m especially looking forward to a visit from my daughter Sarah. I’ve got her old white coat looked out and ironed.

A big thank you and best of luck to Marco and family serving Kilmarnock for over a hundred years is something that should be noted.

Hi everyone

Not the best time of year. The days are getting shorter. Dark when you get up in the morning and dark as you go home at night.

Those of you who have been in the shop recently will know Iain and Arran are keen to have the festive gluten free orders in by Wednesday the 10th of December. This is to enable them to assess the amount of product, gf seasoning and gf pastry so as no one is disappointed.

The orders for the big beef products, roasts, ribs of beef on the bone have been rolling in but worry not we have plenty in stock.

The only slight problem is as always poultry. Trying to fit the orders to the sizes that we have ordered some two months ago can be challenging. Kellybronze turkeys, most sizes left, white turkeys the same, boneless turkey joints and turkey crowns getting tight. Capons and chickens only a few left. Please if you haven’t ordered please do so soon.

Finally in a great concession to help the retail trade in Kilmarnock EAC have waved parking restrictions and charges in December. Every little helps.

21/11/2025

Good evening

Shop small helps us all. Think outside the box tomorrow instead of gravitating to Silverburn or Braehead. Try and do some of your Christmas shopping in Kilmarnock. It helps employ people and the revenue generated stays within the town.

Specials in our own wee emporium tomorrow include large venison burgers, a few veal cutlets and venison joints for roasting.

We are fast approaching the pigs in blankets season and Lucas our new trainee was promoted today to be the pigs in blankets manager. I have to say he made a good job of the tray he produced. They’ll be on display tomorrow. They go very well with the Kellybronze turkeys which I’m sure you will have ordered.

Have a good weekend whatever you’re doing. 🥩🍔😋

20/11/2025

Good evening

A wee quick post tonight. Some people were disappointed last week as we run out of veal chops very quickly. We got a few in today so it’s first come first served or if you give us a ring we’ll put them by for you.

Poultry warning! Only three fresh capons left to sell. Please order soon if you want a festive treat.

Vouchers. We make up vouchers for any amount you wish to spend and the lucky recipient can spend it all at once or bit by bit. Whatever suits them. Just ask the staff for details.

Wee treat time. We have some aged popes eye steak which is very mature and ready for eating. By the way does anyone know why popes eye steak is called this? Only in the West of Scotland.

11/11/2025

Good evening

First a big thank you to everyone who heeded the message last week and called with their gluten free requirements by Wednesday night. This made us make and sell more gluten free items than ever before. This also applies to our gf steak pies and sausage rolls. It seems to work well with a Wednesday cut off.

I would also add that we stock Taste of Goodness sauces. A large range made in Ireland and they’re gluten free. If you buy 2 we may offer a wee deal.

Looking ahead to the weekend we’ve had several requests for our beef and Smokey bacon sausages. We hopefully won’t run out this week.

Some products we don’t have often. Veal will be arriving at the end of the week, Escalopes, Chops and Osso Bucco. We will also have Venison in various forms.

Thanks for reading this, please share it especially to people who have wheat intolerances.
