❄️ Many of us are waking up to snow and icy roads this morning, so here’s what you really need to know to stay safe behind the wheel 🚗💨
Winter driving can be challenging, but a few simple adjustments can make all the difference. Pop the kettle on, take two minutes, and have a read 👇
🔹 Slow and Steady
There’s no rush in these conditions. Reduce your speed and be extra gentle when steering, braking, or accelerating.
🔹 Pull Away in Second Gear
This helps minimise wheel spin on icy surfaces and gives you better control.
🔹 Leave Plenty of Space
Stopping distances increase dramatically on ice, so allow at least double the usual gap.
🔹 Clear Every Window
Yes, even the rear one. Driving with limited visibility isn’t just unsafe — it’s illegal ❌
🔹 Use Your Lights
Even during daylight hours, lights help other road users see you through snow and spray.
🔹 Avoid Using Cruise Control
You need full control and constant feedback from the road in slippery conditions.
🔹 Carry a Winter Emergency Kit
Think blanket, de-icer, scraper, water, snacks, torch, phone charger. Hopefully unnecessary — but invaluable if needed.
🔹 Steer Clear of Steep Hills
If you can’t avoid them, maintain steady momentum and try not to stop halfway.
🔹 Check Conditions Before You Travel
Look at road and weather reports — and ask yourself if the journey really needs to be made.
🧠 Instructor tip: These points make great discussion topics in lessons today, especially for pupils experiencing snowy conditions for the first time.
