Coeliac disease affects about one in 100 children here in the UK.
Most children don’t get diagnosed until much later in life. some start with Coeliacs as babies, showing symptoms as young as 6-9 months when weaning starts.
symptoms include diarrhorea, constipation and other gut symptoms, a slow growth rate or irritability and a bloated tummy.
If undiagnosed, and left untreated Coeliac disease can have a risk of complications. This could include slow weight gain and growth problems, delayed puberty, iron deficiency anemia, chronic fatigue, osteoporosis, migraines, depression, anxiety and mood swings
Please remember that a child must be diagnosed professionally before being put on a gluten free diet
It is advisable to get children tested as soon as possible if you or a close family member suffers from Coeliacs
A gluten free diet should only be started though once a child is formally diagnosed with Coeliac disease by a healthcare professional or doctor.
