We’d really love to get some of these at Ward House Farm one day!

They’re D**g Tao chickens, a very rare breed from Vietnam, famous for those enormous legs and feet. We’ve been to Vietnam ourselves and, despite keeping an eye out for them, never actually managed to see one.

They’re certainly not the prettiest chickens in the traditional sense, but that’s part of the attraction. Just look at those feet!

Definitely one for the WHF wish list. We can just imagine them wandering around here with the rest of our rare breed lot.

And while we’re sharing a little farm update, the bees have been busy too. We’ve got around 20 jars of Hazelrigg Honey left from the current batch, available from the door at £10 a jar if anyone local would like one.

Never a dull moment at Ward House Farm!

🍯 A small honey spin today! 🐝

Our first in two years, after being away last year. It’s lovely to be extracting our own honey again.

It’s only a small batch, so there’ll be a limited number of jars available soon.

Keep an eye on the page for when they’re ready!

We have Kraienkoppe chickens back at Ward House Farm. Looking a little worse for wear (😩😢😳😭). But they are home now - look like they are already settled.

Will see what happens at bed time.

As I am now down from 12 to 5, I might have to hatch some this year after all. Will have to think about that too!!

Two colonies of Black Grampian bees have just joined the WHF family. These bees are supposed to be really calm and even allow you to handle them without a bee-suit. They settled into their permanent hives without flying into my face, so maybe it’s true - BUT, I am not brave enough to try not wearing a bee-suit anytime soon!!

After an 18 month absence, there are chickens back at Ward House Farm. A dozen Russian Orloff; a mix of cuckoo, white, mottled and spangled. Still very young, but they will grow. The Kraienkoppe (another rare breed), will be back on the property by the end of next month.

First swarm of the season. So an extra hive at WHF. We will be building up the number of colonies this year - sadly, will not be much honey in 2026.
