Chirrup AI is helping us better understand the birds that share our farm.
By identifying bird species across the land, we’re gaining valuable insight into habitats, activity, and biodiversity.
This data helps us make smarter farm management decisions—supporting both productive farming and healthier spaces for wildlife. 🌱🐦

A few weeks ago, we hosted an Scottish Agritourism event 🌿 along with South of Scotland Destination Alliance and South of Scotland Enterprise

It was great to bring together so many local businesses to share ideas, experiences, and what’s been working well for them.

Thank you to everyone who came along. It was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, strengthen connections, and gain meaningful insights that will help shape future growth across the industry.

On the farm, we put a lot of thought into what goes into the ground and when. It’s not just about achieving the best yield and quality—it’s about looking after the soil for the future too.

This year, one of the crops we’re growing is h**p. As well as being used to make sustainable products like insulation, textiles and building materials, h**p is also a fantastic natural soil regenerator. Its deep roots help improve soil structure and biodiversity, leaving the land in better condition for the crops that follow.

Good for us. Good for the soil. Good for the future. 🌱

Meet the Butterfly Squad. 🦋

They arrived on the farm in autumn 2025 with one mission: eat grass, make space for wildflowers, and accidentally become butterfly conservationists.

By keeping the fields from turning into a grass-only buffet, they’re helping create the perfect habitat for butterflies and other pollinators!

Drift and Jip are our version of Kaleb…they might not be able to drive a tractor but they certainly make moving easycares a whole lot easier!

They never take a day off, never complain, and somehow still have energy to spare.

Our sheepdogs keep the sheep heading in the right direction, the farm running and the humans on schedule. Honestly, we’re pretty sure they think they’re the bosses—and they’re probably right!

Explore a landscape that has been transformed over the last twenty-five years.

Over that time, we've worked hard to plant and restore:

• 25km of hedgerows
• 60 hectares of woodland
• 12 ponds
• Habitat supporting 12 Red List bird species

We're proud of this work because it's already making a real difference to the ground.

And the landscape continues to evolve. South-facing slopes are becoming drier during hotter summers, so we're helping nature adapt by letting grass grow taller, improving soil health, and creating habitats that can hold more water and support even more wildlife.

It’s not just land that makes a farm, it’s the family who run it, the people who grew up there, the ones who return.

Dave and Ruth never thought they’d grow up to be farmers. And Jim and Jo always encouraged them to find their own passion.

They were both always outside though, adventuring around their own private playground, making their own fun. Dave at the bow and arrows and Ruth trekking the hills on her pony.

Then they grew up and off they went into the world.

After years of adventure home called them back and now Hillhouse Farm (The Hillus in old Scot’s) is home to 3 generations and an exciting future.
