‘Real wine’ is a term embracing wines that are made organically, biodynamically and naturally.
The Real W**e Fair today showcased not only an exciting variety of wines full of personality, but also a community of producers from around the world, determined to work with what they’ve got - and make something wonderful with it.

An interesting day at the conference discussing the ongoing challenges of growing in reduced and peat free media. The variable nutrient lock up continues to pose challenges to both professional and home horticulturalists. Feeding low rate N right from the word go looks to be key in achieving good establishment. I am excited to be planning some work on biostimulants and maximizing nutrient availability in growing media this year.

The power of selective breeding in disease management. Tolerant varieties really do make a huge difference when considering input costs. Outdoor cucurbits can suffer badly with mildew, and with strict MRLs for edible varieties, planning a spray program can be a real challenge. You actually couldn’t write it. My Calthea has thrips, so off I pop to B&Q for a bottle of bug spray and some nails,head to the checkout, to be asked “have you got some ID??”
Me: Erm no, and why??
“Well, you need to be 25 to buy this spray.”
Me: I’m actually 35……..
“I’ll call the manager”
Manager “Have you got any ID at all??”
Me: presents my basis card explaining that developing and selling these products is my actual job.
Woman behind me is absolutely wetting herself laughing at this point 🙄
“ I can only sell you the nails, sorry”
Confiscates bug spray, hands me the pack of nails and a voucher - to not spend on bug spray it would seem. To conclude, I have no bug spray, but I did give Linda behind me a good old laugh, and maybe I’m the only agronomist not allowed to buy baby bio 🤣 👵🏼

Visit to Ginkgo Gardens who have some beautiful perennials on the go. Ginkgo focus on an IPM approach at the nursery, and that really showed in the number of pollinators and natural predators buzzing around us. There were some stunning ancient olive trees on site too, if I’d had a lorry I would have taken one myself!
