The discovery of Legionella bacteria led to the closure of an adult mental health ward, a report has revealed.

Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board (ICB) said a high count of the bacteria was detected in water on Aston Ward at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage, earlier this year.

Breathing in water droplets containing the bacteria can cause Legionnaires' disease, external, a potentially life-threatening lung infection.

The NHS is monitoring levels of the bacteria in the water on a ward at the Lister Hospital.

Showers at a Jersey sports centre remain closed after legionella bacteria was found in part of the water system.

Low counts of the bacteria were found in routine water samples taken from the showers at the Les Quennevais Sports Centre in St Brelade following a recent refurbishment, the Government of Jersey said.

Legionella is a type of bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease, external, a potentially serious lung infection.

Officials stressed the bacteria found was not legionella pneumophila, the main cause of the illness.

Residents put at risk of deadly disease as company fined £900k

A company has been fined following an outbreak of legionella at its sheltered housing accommodation in Birkenhead, putting vulnerable residents at risk of contracting Legionnaires’ disease.

The deadly bacteria was detected at Vincent Naughton Court following the sampling of its water systems in the communal areas and flats in July and August 2018.
