Tynt Meadow, our English Trappist Ale, is borne of reflection and made with joy. It comes from Mount Saint Bernard Abbey, a community where work is a form of prayer and peace is at the heart of everything we do. Bottle fermented under the watchful eyes of Cistercian monks, our not-for-profit brewery produces Trappist b**rs that are great for any occasion while helping to support our community.

It’s hard to believe that this week we’re brewing our 196th batch of b**r. In just a few weeks, we’ll reach batch number 200! 🥳

What a journey it has been since the monks of Mount St Bernard Abbey received the generous gift that enabled them to establish Mount St Bernard Trappist Brewery—home of Tynt Meadow, England’s only Trappist ale.

Since then, in keeping with Trappist tradition, proceeds from the sale of our ales have directly helped to fund the restoration and upkeep of parts of the Abbey and monastery, supporting the brothers in their life of prayer and work.

One of the desert Fathers was asked by his disciple this question - what is a monk? The reply was that a monk is someone who asks himself every day, "What is a monk"?

Monastic life has the purpose of restoring the divine likeness as a monk progressively attains the “full measure of the stature of Christ”; to re-live the mysteries of His life in his monastic practices, and so be formed to His likeness.

But each monk is called to re-live it in a unique way.

The rhythm of prayer, work and community may be shared between the monks here at Mount St Bernard Abbey... but God’s work within each life is deeply personal.

If you're at Western Park B**r Festival this weekend in Leicester, you'll find Tynt Meadow Blond on keg and Tynt Meadow in cask (the only cask conditioned Trappist b**r in the world - very rare!!!).

this weekend in Leicester, you'll find Tynt Meadow Blond on keg and Tynt Meadow in cask (the only cask conditioned Trappist b**r in the world - very rare!!!).

Since it began in 2015, the festival has donated an incredible £68,000 to Leicester-based charities. This year, it is supporting Help the Homeless Leicester with the aim of raising another £10,000.

The festival makes a particular effort to support local charities, food vendors and breweries with a carefully curated drinks list offering everything from b**rs to stronger ales, c***rs, wines and gin.

If you’re heading along, look out for Tynt Meadow on the bar and help support a wonderful local cause while enjoying some excellent b**r.

Spaces for the remaining tour throughout 2026 are now completely SOLD OUT.

We do run a waitlist, which you are welcome to join (via our website) in case any parties drop out and spaces become available.

On the Brewery Tour booking page, select a date you're interested in, click the 'Join Waitlist' button, fill in the form, and we'll be in touch with you should a slot become available.

We'll be announcing dates for 2027 at the start of October.

Don't forget to join us this Bank Holiday weekend for our Brewery Shop opening.

We'll be around on Saturday (open 11:30 - 17:00) and Monday (from 10:30 - 16:30) with an incredible range of Trappist b**rs available from our fellow Trappist breweries, including Orval, Westmalle Trappist, Trappist Westvleteren, La Trappe Trappist, Tre Fontane, Chimay, Trappistes Rochefort, Zundert and, of course, Tynt Meadow.

Our team of staff and volunteers will be on hand to talk you through the available b**rs with their extensive knowledge.

The Brewery Shop is located just within the Abbey farm gates in the small wooden building.

The apples in our two orchards are looking nice and ripe 🍎

There are two orchards here at Mount St Bernard Abbey: an older, larger one - which is almost as old as the monastery itself and was originally planted for the monks as part of their self-sufficient farming. And a 'newer' - but still old! - smaller orchard.

Both orchards have numerous varieties of apples, one of which is Saint Ailred. The orchard didn't originally contain this sweet, juicy variety but according to monastic community, "a group of apple enthusiasts, who look after a village community orchard, came on a trip to see our orchards and brought us a St. Ailred tree as a gift."

Mainly, the apples are used for eating and cooking, including the making of many crumbles. The monks also press the apples and drink the fresh juice, and additionally make naturally fermented c***r in the process with the excess juice.

(And, no - before you ask - we won't be making c***r commercially any time soon).

Next to the brew kit, our former monk brewmaster Fr Mateusz left behind his breviary, containing the psalms, antiphons, hymns, readings and prayers used for the daily Divine Office.

It's pretty old and has beautiful illustrations in it, so we treat it carefully. It's also all in Latin. Our brew team are definitely more au fait with gravity readings rather than reading Latin, so it mostly serves as a gentle reminder whenever they approach the brew-kit of what monastic brewing is all about.

As the motto goes here at Mount St Bernard Abbey, "ora et labora" (prayer and work).

Don't forget next Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday, the Brewery Shop will be open between 11:30 - 17:00 on Saturday and 10:30 - 16:30 on Bank Holiday Monday, selling bottles of Tynt Meadow, merch and gifts, as well as a wide variety of Trappist b**rs.

Don't miss out b**rs from Zundert, which is no longer in production after the closure of Maria Toevlucht Abbey in the Netherlands 🇳🇱

These are fabulous ales are rich, complex and bold. As they are 8% and 10% respectively, they are best enjoyed slowly and mindfully.

Come and find these, as well as many other fantastic Trappist b**rs, in the Brewery Shop up here at Mount St Bernard Abbey, located just within the farm-yard gates (in the little green building).

Yesterday was the Feast of St Bernard of Clairvaux, in whose honour Mount Saint Bernard Abbey is named.

St Bernard was one of the great figures of the early Cistercian tradition. When he entered the new monastery at Cîteaux as a young man, he brought with him around thirty friends and relatives, helping bring fresh life to the small movement.

Within a few years, he was sent to establish Clairvaux Abbey and, from there, the Cistercian way of life spread across Europe through dozens of new monastic communities.

St Bernard was a gifted preacher and writer, and is remembered for his love of prayer, simplicity and community. This legacy continues to shape Cistercian life today, which we enjoy up here at Mount St Bernard Abbey.
