Sumners Butchers

Cliff and Carol Sumner bought the premises at landside shops which was at the time a bric a brac shop to turn into a butchers. Cliff was a manager at a wholesale meat suppliers in Bolton, therefore finding produce wasn’t much of a problem. Carol worked in the shop as well as raising a family, Cliff worked days at Bolton and evenings at the shop boning out beef. In 1982 as trade was getting busier

they decided to advertise for an experienced butcher, just by chance a well-known butcher that had decided that retirement from the Co-op wasn’t for him applied , Dougie Gibbons said in the interview that he would love to help get the shop established and would start immediately to cover until they found someone permanent. Dougie did such a magnificent job that he was still there 15 years later. In 1991 Carol cut back her hours from full time and another butcher joined the business, Derek Oldham originally from Sale has been a butcher since he was still at school, he had moved to Leigh a few years previous. Now 20 years + he is still working in the shop. Around 1992 after a few years trying out college Cliff and Carol’s son Troy started full time and is still working in the family business today. Various other family members have helped to keep it a family butchers including Andrea Jones, June Worsley, Pat Wright and Carol and Cliff’s daughter Nicola couldn’t escape for a few years. Sumner’s butchers are now part of the English Beef & Lamb Executive (Eblex) scheme that ensures traceability and eating quality from farm to shop. We also stock and excellent range of English pork and poultry. We make our own burgers and sausages, which once you try are sure you will agree that they are rather good, the range includes;

Even though we are a traditional family butchers we also supply catering outlets from pie manufacturers, restaurants, nurseries and residential homes. Having an independent butchers shop in the 21st century with all the larger supermarkets around is proving increasingly difficult, but Sumner’s butchers can supply a local quality product at a reasonable price.
