Well that’s the end of grazing for the summer calving bunch. From Thursday they will be 100% on hay. I have a plan, and have done this before but it doesn’t fill me with joy. They will be slowly moved every day across one of our worst fields and fed 2 round bales. The dropped seeds, concentration of dung and urine should dramatically change the field. The aim will be to leave as much as the farm as possible undisturbed primed for post rain recovery. Well that’s the plan….

In order to make our grass go further we are now feeding the summer calving mob a hay bale each afternoon. Using winter feed now is not great but it’s essential to keep them well fed. I bought the bale grazer bale unroller earlier in the year as I couldn’t face a summer of unrolling by hand and moving bales multiple times, plus I thought if I bought it there was no way I’d actually need it this year……
Anyway It’s excellent and tows behind the electric buggy no problem.

The cows are now getting a round bale of hay a day to make the grass go a little further. They have lots of shade but will take a breezy spot of shade at any time of the day. This side of the farm our water pressure is more dependable, which makes life less stressful. 30 now calved, 11 to go!

A busy week of silage and hay making. Here is our contractor raking mown grass into a swath for silage, accompanied by Red Kites. I cut it in the evening and early morning to try and preserve as much moisture as possible and just got away with it. A good feeling to start winter preparations properly.

A fine Sunday morning. Cows moved to new pastures next to the River Thames. Small traffic jam whilst they came down the road but drivers and cyclists all great. Loads of Autumn Hawkbit in flower, loads of grassland butterflies. See them from Waterhay car park. Beef sign needs a clean and restocking with leaflets ready for next weekend big beef sale ……

So June haymaking is kind of bittersweet- on one hand you are making hay at its peak from a cow nutrition standpoint and also removing maximum nutrients which encourages non grass biodiversity, but it’s a shame to see it all cut when it looks so good . Insect wise you would ideally leave it longer but it’s all a compromise. And then there’s getting a weather window…
