We have calves on the farm almost all year round so we have a constant supply of beef for the farm shop. Lamb and mutton are a different story however.

We lamb later than others, and outside, so our new season lamb doesn’t start until the autumn. This does cause problems, especially at the moment when we are almost sold out of our frozen cuts.

Claire, Matthew and Scott have hatched a plan for some of our ewes to have lambs earlier in the year so we can have a more consistent supply. This meant that the tups were put out with some sheep last week. This is what they’ve been waiting for all year and after a brief hesitation they certainly ran off enthusiastically!

The seasons are changing. While we still have the delicious soft fruit from local farms in the shop, plums, apples and pears are starting to come in.

We have a small quantity of apples from our walled garden, Lord Lambourne for eating and Stobo Castle and Bramley for cooking. We also work with local of local people and buy their surplus fruit, so watch the baskets of the next month or so.

We love noting the seasons and seeing the produce change over the course of a year.

Did you know that we have our own lager, made from barley grown and harvested here on our farm?

One of the things dad always said he’d love to do was make some lager from all the barley we grew. A few years after he died we decided that it was a great idea and we’d like to try.

With help from Crafty Maltsters in Auchtermuchty who malted our barley and then St.Andrews Brewing Company who brewed it, we created Rob’s Lager.

It’s not fancy or niche, it’s just a really lovely lager, easy to drink and very refreshing. The kind of bottle dad would have cracked open at the end of a long day harvesting.

It’s in our shop and available to order online on our website. We have gift boxes or individual bottles.

Let us know what you think, have you tried Rob’s Lager?

That’s our beautiful tallow butters restocked so we have everything back in the shop and online.

It’s our own 100% grass-fed tallow in these nourishing body and face butters. They are beautifully soft and delicate and use only the best ingredients.

So many customers have told us how much they love them and we’ve had lots of emails asking when they will be back in stock. Pick them up in store or we can post them to you, check out our website: www.ardrossfarm.co.uk

Any other busy working parents been limping towards school going back?

I (Nikki) absolutely love the school holidays. We thrive on the lack of routine, time spent outside and as a family. However, the juggle is real, and exhausting and everyone in this Instagram perfect world, make it look easy (from the outside).

I’m sure other parents will be feeling just as frazzled as us. We made it though, with Fife schools heading back this morning. Next on the list is getting back into a routine and getting meals pinned down again.

I thought I’d highlight our excellent range of COOK ready meals which are a lifesaver in our house. Of course we all love to make things from scratch but sometimes life just doesn’t play ball and that’s when having these meals in the freezer come in so handy. The boys have decided the Lasagne is actually better than mine and I’m just delighted not to phaff around making it anymore!

From mac cheese to curry or beef bourguignon we have a huge selection of meals on one, two and four portions, all cook from frozen. The perfect thing to have in the freezer for days that just don’t go to plan!

We were really sad to hear that Scotland the Bread were to stop milling last month. It’s incredibly special to have local flour, grown and milled in the area. The good news is that we bought lots of their last batch and so have plenty in the shop, until it runs out.

There are also rumours of some people locally taking over where they left off so watch this space.

Our wheat, although not heritage, has just been harvested and will be heading to be milled soon. We’ve got 2 bags of pasta left in the shop and no flour however we should be fully stocked for the year ahead by the end of September!

We’re very much a family business!

Today Claire, Matthew and Scott are trying desperately to get our harvest in and baling up to date before the weather changes after the weekend.

This means auntie Nikki is in the shop with Fergus serving, doing deliveries and an induction for a new member of our team.

Meanwhile granny Fiona is along helping Tara at Woodland Gardens Caravan Site with three grandchildren while Tara does check in’s and turn overs.

It’s never a dull day here, especially during harvest!!
