Hunter:Gather:Cook

Hunter:Gather:Cook Hunter:Gather:Cook- Adventures in Wild food Hunter:Gather:Cook is the blog created by Nick Weston, a writer, chef, woodsman and fisherman based in Sussex, UK.

After living for 6 months in a treehouse built from natural and recycled materials, in which Nick lived off the land and a small vegetable patch, his book- The Treehouse Diaries: how to live wild in the woods was published in 2010. Hunter:Gather:Cook is no longer just a blog,

it is now a foraging and cookery school that specializes in outdoor living and self-sufficiency based in Sussex across tw

o sites a treehouse and a barn. Our courses are designed to teach you how to identify, process and cook a range of wild plants and animals. We also focus on other elements to help you on your way to becoming the ultimate 21st century hunter-gatherer:

Rabbit, Pigeon & Squirrel- processing, trapping & cooking
Plant identification guided walk
Fishing: Carp catch & cook on our pond
Fire lighting & Flint knapping
Wild brewing and tasting
Shelter building and wild camping

The courses take place in a stunning 40 acre farm near Lewes in Sussex, Hunter:Gather:Cook HQ sits in the middle of a wood and takes groups of up to twelve. Everything is made from the surrounding landscape: the canopy, tables and benches and off-grid sandstone kitchen unit consisting of fire pit and clay oven. With a selection of options from an overnighter to a day course or half day, we cater for absolutely anyone who wants to learn more about how to live comfortably in the wild, from individuals to corporate groups and schools. Whether its squirrel & cep pizzas, potted rabbit, nettle pesto or Meadowsweet cheesecake, you will not only rediscover some of the best food the countryside has to offer, but also learn how to use them as everyday ingredients.

Apparently this old chestnut from 2009 is back on the market. A compelling story of me saying **** off to the world for my own reasons and leaving London to go back to my roots in Sussex doing what I love and living on my own terms with no schedule, a few deadlines (book stuff), but really enjoying life to the max.
It received a bit of criticism, mainly because I wasn’t doing it in a Waldon esqe, crusty, survivalist way. However it did recieve a lot of praise from the people that got it. So thankful to those that have read it. It is a strange thing to throw packaged words into the world that engages them.

Foundations are so important as are backstories. Build it. What I do now with HGC would not exist if I’d never taken a jump off a cliff and hoped for a soft landing. Been rocky along the way, but hey, it’s so worth it. Have the biggest respect for those around you and encourage you, have no time for the naysayers. Ps. Writing books is a hard thing when you are dyslexic. That’s why editors are good people.

Things that you find after 30yrs. 1st year of my life in Oman, my dads company was called Eton consultants because Weston was not easy to pronounce in Oman, they lived in Jamaica for 5 years, (wish that I’d grown up there). And a bit of Switzerland, the other home from home. The Omani plates was off a 110 Landrover defender they shipped back. The fork & spoon from their travels to Haiti. My mum grew up in Colombia until she was 14. Brief Weston family history.
