Let’s talk about insects.

As a result of the recent high temperatures, we’ve noticed more aphids than usual on the farm. Aphids thrive in warm temperatures and sheltered environments and initially we were a little worried, however, experience has taught us patience, to trust natural biological control, and now the tables are turning. Parasitic wasps, ladybird and hover fly larvae are arriving - they’re all natural predators of aphids. Parasitic wasps are particularly interesting as they lay their eggs inside the aphids and their developing larvae feed on it internally, killing it and forming a hardened ‘mummy’. Adult wasps later emerge from the ‘mummy’ and continue the cycle by parasitising more aphids. This natural method of “pest” control highlights how natural predators are key in maintaining ecological balance. By targeting aphids, parasitic wasps can protect crops without harming other insects or plants.

Hover flies also hunt plant-eating “pests” (see their larvae in the final pic) and are fantastic pollinators, eating nectar and pollen, providing them with the energy needed to continue to hover and pollinate. They particularly like hedge-grow plants, such as cow parsley, wild carrot, and white campion, all of which can be found around the farm.

Organic farming is about patience and belief. Trusting nature, not pesticides. All these insects are part of an ecological system and we need them to keep everything in balance.

Some exciting news from the farm!

Field Food’s New Kitchen At The Farm

Libby & Henry’s new farm kitchen is now on site here with us and they’ve created a characteristically beautiful space to cook from. They’ll be hosting their guests in our events glasshouse and it’s the start of an exciting new chapter for us both. “We’ve spent over 10 years building towards a life and business rooted in food, land, and community,” explains Henry, “and to now share space with a team dedicated to incredible produce and local people feels very special.” They first spoke with Harry just over a year ago and, over the winter, alongside Adrian and his son, together they built a small kitchen on the farm. “It’s a space to cook, experiment and bring everything together, just metres from where it’s grown. We’re here to help bring this incredible produce to more people, through seasonal food experiences.”

We’re so pleased to have them! Visit their website to see what experiences they are offering and give them a follow

Hello from the farm 👋

We have had a very productive week on the farm. Plenty to harvest, including all the leafy greens (red Russian kale, spring greens, chard, lettuce, mixed salad), green garlic, asparagus, radishes, purple sprouting, cauliflowers, parsley, sea kale…

Lots of planting, hoeing, potting on the tomatoes and chillies and of course, sowing. We have also been busy building some new raised beds outside our event space for flowers and herbs (more on that later).

It is always an exciting moment when seedlings are moved from inside the prop and out on the hardening off bench - a sign that the colder months are behind us🤞

Next up? The mega squash sowing!

Hello from the farm 👋

We planted our first bed of dwarf beans this week, along with a some beetroot, spring onions, all the lettuce and red Russian kale. The peas are revealing their first flowers - we’ll be harvesting those sugar snaps in no time. And the radishes are plumping up nicely. We also harvested our first lot of asparagus this week. Limited supply, but it is available as a nice seasonal extra on our website for next week. The purple sprouting broccoli is a bumper crop this year (still plenty to come) and we will begin harvesting our bunched green garlic next week.

Have a happy, long weekend everyone 🧑‍🌾

Forced sea kale - we have been experimenting in the glasshouses. In the wild, you’ll see it growing along shingle beaches, with cabbage-like leaves and it has a sprouty flavour. We’ve been starving it of light or forcing it as it’s known in the growing world and it’s very tender and much sweeter as a result. The different coloured lids/tubs that we have used to force the kale has created a beautiful spectrum of different coloured sea kale. Available this week, add one to your box, toss with a little lemony dressing and add it to a salad. Do let us know what you think!
