With this glorious weather cancelling my work off due to no growth I took the opportunity to have a ride out on the bike towards Lichfield with this little shop on the outskirts.

The Shop : just out of town but easily accessible with convenient parking and a couple benches made this the ideal location for myself with the bike instead of a van to sit in.
A modern little shop with LCD menus and a few seats for waiting inside.
The young man serving was very polite and welcoming and got my order together from fresh doing preference checks all along the way.

The Meal : mini-fish meal off the daytime special board with choice of sauce and only a short wait on my fish.
A thinner cut but cooked beautifully, crunchy copper caramelised batter that was light and crisp whilst firm enough hold itself together on the rollover, succulent soft flesh inside, a delightful little cut.
Chips had a gloriously golden fry with ease of separation and the jacket on the fry took seasoning like a champ which it held well and could've easily asked for more, finger grabbingly good.
The curry was a fairly standard lumpy bumpy classic but well mixed with nice flavour and great dippability.

The Price : £5.99 for the meal during the day and even with a drink on top it only came to a smidge under £7.50.

Overall impressions : excellent value, nice portion size and well prepared and cooked items will always satisfy, easily an 8 even for a simple affair, but simply great.

Back on the road after the run of awards reviews and heatwave left me completely chippied out I had a friend along for the journey so had extra pressure to find one of note, scouring a few areas this is the one that spoke to me so locked in for a visit...

The Shop : sat just off a busy main through road with some convenient 1hr bays right outside means stopping in can be a doddle.
Inside is a vibrantly modern tiled shop feeling very seasidey with it's nostalgia inducing chalkboard menu's adding to the effect.
Polite staff working in tandem got our order together in no time and freshly fried with preference checks all along the way installing more confidence in the expectations.

The Meal : mini-fish off the side specials board included a sauce and can, I also opted to pay extra for additional sauce just to try both.
Getting onto the sauces first for a change the regular had a velvety smooth thickness that coated beautifully and a subtle fruity sweetness that was great on the palette, the Chinese style with it's peppery warmth was also a delight and I'd be hard pushed pick a favourite, if this was my local i'd happily chop and change between on visits.
Chips had a lovely fry, no clumpage and pillowy soft tater innards.
The fish had a strong and firm yet delicate casing, no squidge and perfect crunch holding the weight of the succulent fishy middles effortlessly.

The Price : £7.50 for a meal, sauce and drink is absolutely bob on and superb value, especially when this tasty.

Overall impressions : if this was my doorstepper shop I'd be more than happy and would certainly have regular treats, a solid score without questioning itself gets into the 8s.

So normally I reserve revisits for refurbs, re-openings or request and upon re-opening a few months back I did pay them a visit and whilst it wasn't a glowing score it was an improvement on the previous legacy visit to that, breaking news ground it's getting its third visit by request of the owner as they felt they could do better and did acknowledge and take on board the critiques...

The Shop : pretty much covered within the last visit a few months back and aside from losing the opening week balloons it's the same modern and clean cut aesthetic inside with the LCD menus.

The Meal : with a regular and mini option available I just went for the mini as that is generally enough of a feed for me and my regular order when visiting places where available for consistency.
Fish cooked to order and a decent enough size for a mini, plump and firm flesh inside was cooked well but perhaps bordering a little overdone with a slight bounce to the mouth feel, batter was quite thin and crisp with no overly stodgy cake layer so I'm happy there.
Chips were again fairly plump, a little softer on the fry and texture but more than likely down to the potato variety in season rather than the cook on it, held seasoning well and little clumpage to worry of.
The curry once again impressive with the smooth smokey richness that coated and dripped well with it's viscosity on point for gloopology.
Still only poured over potted as the serving standard so I'd have preferred if they took that preference check on board from last time but at least it went on the chips first before fish to save that dousing although still results in a wet belly for me fishy.

The Price : £8.50 is about on par for a serving of this size.

Overall impressions : noticeable improvements over last time with really only specific niche preferences holding them back on my own individual tastes, still forward momentum though.

Ok so even though this place has been open and operating for a few months now it is somewhere I've personally never been to here or otherwise so wanted to see what the hype it gets is all about...

The Shop : they have their American diner style branding which i'd assume is very much the same across the franchise so if you've seen one then much like the other big chain giants you know what the aesthetics will be.

The Meal : very simple menu to choose from, essentially it's a burger, cheeseburger or bacon cheeseburger and you build up from there( interesting point from my better half though she prefers this method to other chains where she finds she has to fiddle about removing things).
I kept it simple with a bacon cheese double, added lettuce tomato and pickles, small fries on the side(stuck to the small after being well aware of the dump extra in the bag policy), and a refillable soda(of which I definitely rinsed my money's worth, 2 cups with my meal and a final refill to walk with).
So the burger itself was tasty but nothing life changing or even felt like it was high end beef and if I'm honest I'd sooner have a big tasty.
The fries whilst in abundance and reminiscent of a home cooked chip pan fry were a little on the floppy side and again that extra scoop is a bit gimmicky.

The Price : £20.55 for my 3 piece set up which lets be honest isn't cheap and easily half again of what you might spend at the other big players.

Overall impressions : I've got at least 2 independent smash burger style shops in close proximity to me that offer better quality for around a third less which is where my coin shall travel, that aside as a treat or in an unfamiliar location it's decent enough if pricey and I wasn't sad about it.

FizzyFavouriteFridays - so I'm quite partial to a cream soda but usually I'd choose crab juice over mountain dew(well done if you got that reference), however on this occasion something about the two just clicks and connects here...

Definitely has that smooth ice cream float type flavour but it also has a very subtle fruit type tone, kinda like a vanilla sorbet float, not only am I not mad at it I actually found it really quite refreshing, pair that with a burger n fries and you got your American experience.

Crewe & Stoke-on-Trent on behalf of English Fish and Chip Awards

So I know I've been a little quiet on the page since my last local outing and figured I'd drop a quick update for anyone thinking I'd dropped off a cliff or such.

I was lucky enough at the start of June to be asked to participate in some of the required judging for their inaugural awards that were upcoming by visiting a few shops in my local catchment area on their behalf as a judge.

Now with the awards upcoming and pending not long after I didn't have a lot of time to scramble and get those reviews in to them, this meant on top of my Wednesday visit of my own that week the Friday and Saturday consisted of chippy tea, chippy dinner, chippy tea, which as you may imagine left a little potatoed out, I also couldn't reveal the visits till after the awards themselves.

That being said I was honoured for my small part and inclusion and it was an enjoyable experience.

I had 3 assigned shops to cover and one was a new one to me which I think will certainly get an official look at for my own stuff, the second has long been a regular favourite pop-in which I will also be giving a return visit to, then there was the third one, anyway I had a lot of fish and chips and I'm ready go again now over the coming weeks.

FizzyFavouriteFridays - been a while since I've found a new fizzy fancy mainly because all the alternative flavours tend to be geared towards the sugar free zero crowd of which I am not, however team red has done me happy with this one...

Somewhere between a cream soda or doctor pepper vibe this one just absolutely slaps on taste, creamy and quite sweet but without the sugary furry teeth sensation.

I'm still Coke over Pepsi and this just solidifies my stance.

So after some horrendous working weather I really had an urge for a chippy tea but didn't fancy a long distance adventure in evening traffic to scratch that itch, I'd noticed that a relatively local one had reopened under new ownership not long ago and thought it was a good time given them the revisit.

The Shop : as before it's nestled away to a degree you wouldn't find it unless you knew it was there or like me scour Google maps for locations, the new owners are a bit more social media active so they are pushing their shop a little bit and it's great to see them using modern tech to draw folks in.
Not much has changed aesthetically since before but it definitely feels clean and well maintained all the same inside with the two lovely girls serving getting my order together freshly and offering potted or poured on my sauce.

The Meal : a freshly cooked fish is always welcome and this one was a lovely size for a meal offer, a flatter cut with a light batter, I'd have like some more aeration to give some crispy bubble trouble but it still had a light flaky crisp to it, succulent medallions of white gold inside were a delight.
Chips were mainly irregular cuts with scraps n bits joining along, enticingly picky chips with a nice jacket and no clumpage.
Curry was smooth with a very subtle smoke and great gloopology for dippage.

The Price : £7.50 sits it fair and reasonable for me.

Overall impressions : so whilst it's not reinventing the wheel or changing the face of chippies it did do exactly what I needed, a great tasting little feed full of flavour and quality, and whilst an 8 from 5 years ago might not stand up the same with all I've experienced I'm happy to say in their case it's still a good solid 8 and deservedly so.

The Good Catch

So after a bit of a mad rush at work I've not had my fix in a few weeks and took a punt on a Google scan that was under an hour away, this one spoke out most so took a run up the M6...

The Shop : sat on the doorstep of Altrincham AFC gives this one a strong chance of good footfall on match days if nothing else.
A smartly design new school shop tiled and stainless with nice branding throughout including their packaging.
Multiple servers working to put my order together is nice to see with each carrying out their roles politely and welcomingly.
A hand written but very neatly done chalkboard pen menu gives that classic feel even with the modern twist.

The Meal : no special to order directly so build-a-bear mode engaged and with a mild and madras spice curry on offer I opted for both coming all this way.
Fish came as one sizing and cooked to order, a beautifully buttery caramelised batter with bubbles and crunch throughout and not a sign of wet squidgy, soft and chunky cod flaking away delightfully.
Chips had a nice colour and asmr'ingly scrapey jacket to the fry, holding seasoning like a champ.
The mild curry was fairly standard lumpy bumpy and to purists may appeal more, I however preferred the spicy with it's smokey garam masala tone and spot on for gloopology, a perfect dipper.
All packed and branded very smartly and professionally.

The Price : arguably up there at £10.70 for F&C with saucey supplements at £1.70 a pop but I've paid as much and more at the big fast food chains for far less savoury satisfaction.

Overall impressions : an excellent quality shop that's definitely going in my mental highlight reel top 20, a few finishing touches like lemon wedges and tartar could have elevated it towards top 10/5 easily.
