8.45pm Rob's finally got home for tea after a very long day working with grass to make silage. He cut it on Friday. Then today he had to row it all up into rows for the baler..... then go over it all again with the round baler. We have a contractor who wraps all the bales for us in the field and then we will lead all the bales home.

The last half bale of silage came home in the baler and he's given it to our heavily pregnant heifers who we brought in from the back field last night so we can keep a close eye on them calving (and so that as first timers, they dont reject the strange mooing thing that appears behind them!)

That's now 180 more bales to add to our pile of winter food stocks. We usually aim to make about 1000 silage bales, as well asne needing hay and barley. We then also buy in a bit of reject potatoes and/or sugar beet too.

Ps I've been doing farm accounts paperwork today too... but its not as exciting to talk about and isnt photogenic either πŸ™„

The calves are very inquisitive! Rob's been flat out making silage all day so i popped along to check on the cattle at Rand for him.
All present and correct (ie Strawberry was in the right field πŸ˜‚). But Fred the bull is looking lame so he needs a bit of treatment.
The ducks are trying hard to still swim in one of the seasonal ponds, but its drying out fast and they are actually stood up in it!

Wow! So is Tesco beef only 90% beef and 10% potato starch!?
I promise you our beef joints are 100% beef.

The only bits we sell with any extra ingredients are the burgers and sausages.

Can you see Tiger Cow's calf curled up for bedtime in the twilight? She was born a couple of days ago.
I'm starting to question Tiger Cow's maternal instincts as she has already managed to lose her calf in the field twice and Rob has had to reunite them!!

Today's game of hide and seek. Ive found two farmyard hens have been laying here! 10 eggs for me! It must be a baking day today πŸ˜€
NB I don't sell these eggs as I can't guarantee when they were laid - i use them myself. I only sell the eggs from the proper nesting boxes that I check daily.

Its another soggy day on the farm. At least this store beast has the choice of being under cover or not. We still have the last few cattle still in sheds on the farm.... ones that we want to keep a close eye on for various reasons.
At least this wet weather is helping the grass to grow. But soon we will be into hay making season (usually its Lincolnshire show week!) so we could do with a nice dry warm week then to make the hay.
I have been taking advantage of the dry spells between the showers to work on my vegetable patch. Last year I didn't manage to grow any veg so the nettles and thistles took over, so its taking a lot of effort to get it back into shape πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

We dont often buy cows into our farm to avoid the risk of bringing in disease.... the last ones we bought were 3 years ago. But after last summer's drought leading to several cows who aborted, Rob felt it necessary to aquire some new cows and calves.
We have bought in 3 new cows and their month old calves at hoof. These are TB area 4 so aren't subject to any extra TB movement tests (the cows were tested and clear a few months ago). They are just settling in, in the sheds to make sure they are all OK, and then they'll be going out into the pastures with the other month old calves and their mums.

We are down on calf numbers this year so these extra 3 calves are useful to bolster our numbers and therefore our income for next year.... and the two white calves are both female so we will keep them as breeding heifers as they are not related to our bulls.
