After the wettest weather on record, we eventually got a dry warm day and were able to get into our hives 😃
Much like the rest of the UK, we unfortunately have lost lots of hives. The bees can cope with cold/icy weather, but sustained rain/damp conditions just seem to wear them down. It’s very sad for us, but we shall carry on and will build our colonies back up again.
I’ve attached a couple of images from some of our hives, with some descriptions as well 😍

Normally during Winter beekeepers are very busy preparing for spring, but we were contacted by a lovely couple who, while working on their house, had some bees that they were concerned about. They were adamant that they wanted the bees removed and not destroyed.
We sprung into action, loaded up the bee trailer and car and went to investigate.
They had 2 colonies coming into the flat roof space at different places and asked us to remove them.
Thankfully, they allowed us to cut out the ceiling to expose them.
The colonies were both quite small, and would probably not have survived the winter and so we feel we are giving them the best chance.
We used our bee vac to try to remove as many of the bees as possible and placed them into a hive. We were also very fortunate to be able to find the queen while we were in site, and so we placed her into a special cage to stay safe while we worked.
The bees have been moved to a quarantine apiary prior to us relocating them to one of our beautiful sites.
Watch this space to see how they progress over winter and into 2026

All set up for a lovely day of chatting to people about honey, candles and bees. Stop by and say hello

The bees have worked amazingly hard and produced some beautiful frames of honey.
We only take off about half of what the bees produce, as we leave them enough to get through winter etc.
We remove the wax capping, using a special fork, and then spin the honey out, and then give the ‘wet’ frame back to the bees.

I love sitting watching the bees coming and going. All without a control tower watching over them and guiding them in, with obvious consequences 😍

A beautiful site at one of my apiaries. I love seeing the wild flower meadows come to life

So unfortunately I managed to fall through a roof while trying to collect a swarm of bees and broke my leg. I’m very grateful to one of my fellow honey farmers who is looking after my bees. Thank you Duncan at Simmons Apiaries.
