Cask Series #6: MSA 1995 – GY/JM - 45,7% vol.
Among the many stories resting in the warehouse of The Main Rum Company, the tale of this cask is one of partnership and experimentation. It brings together Rums from two highly respected Rum nations: Guyana and Jamaica.
On the Guyanese side, this is a blend of different marks and a mix of still types: a wooden pot still, a column still and a wooden Coffey still. First distilled in 1992, it spent around 2 years ageing at origin before being shipped to Liverpool. There, it was later blended with Wedderburn-type Rums from some of Jamaica’s most revered distilleries.
The Main Rum Company needed to create something completely unique for a special project. The blend that was created was so good that when a small surplus became available in the mid 90’s, the team laid some down in Once Used Bourbon casks to mature in their Liverpool warehouse.
Pour it for the first time, give it a moment in the glass, and the characteristic aged Jamaican profile quickly reveals itself: caramelised pineapple, ripe mango and an underlying, gently funky musk. Despite its age, it remains strikingly vibrant and punchy. These expressive top notes are then gracefully followed by the deep complexity of the Guyana Rums and the extended ageing: subtle smoke, dark chocolate, liquorice and spice.
On the palate, it opens brightly with generous fruit tones such as pineapple and stone fruit, with a slight fusel note (not at all unpleasant). As it develops, marzipan and liquorice come to the fore, leading into a smooth, long and lingering finish.
