It was like paradise working on the land today! Even moving four tonnes of shale by hand is fun in the sun!!

11/04/2024

That was a long, wet, but productive planting season. We planted about 2000 trees in total, including Willow for biomas, Poplar for a windbreak, a 20m live willow fence, a 50m hedge to act as a windbreak and a wildlife corridor and a variety of trees to develop our food forest. Some of the varieties planted include: Alder, Autumn Olive, Himalayan Honeysuckle, Josta Berry, Tayberry, Redcurrents, Early Raspberries, Downy Birch, Rowan, Dogwood, Dog Rose, Wild Cherry, Crab apple, Hazel, Elder, Crab Apple, Blackthorn, Goat Willow, Field Maple, Common Oak, Silver Birch, Green Beech, Hornbeam, Alder Hawthorn, Spindle, Birch and Hornbeam. That's about it, if anyone is still here!!

Shwmae all, We hope you are all safe and sound after storm Isha.

We are Will and Rita, partners in love and work, parents to our wonderful 5 year old Luna Nettie. We are vegetable growers and run a small veg box delivery buisness in beutiful Gelli Aur, South West Wales providing weekly deliveries to over 40 local households. We use a No Dig System with Organic principles. We have great respect for the land and see our positions as more of a lifestyle than a job, we live a humble life on a low wage in a self built horsebox home. We run a volunteer day every Tuesday and offer open access of our land for volunteers to enjoy access to the countryside. We work with a Social Farms and Gardens project to bring naturally grown food into local schools.

Our fields took a battering during storm Isha, the storm chewed up and spat out our 7 meter by 30 meter polytunnel which was underconstruction and almost finished.

We along with constructers and volunteers had been working hard on errecting it and skinning two polytunnels since last year. Alot of energy, time and money has been spent so we are understandably devastated by the impact of this storm. The small 2nd tunnel was luckily unaffected but the 1st tunnel which was mid construction is unusable and will need to be replaced.

With your donations we wish to purchase a new polytunnel as soon as possible as to affect the food production as little as possible. This tunnel was to also be used as part of the Social Farms and Gardens project to bring naturally grown food into schools.

Breakdown of costs- Tunnel frame, skin, timber, attachments and concrete. £6,050

So good to read an article where the journalist actually understands OPD policy and has written something that might help others rather than just trying to boost viewings. Also, brilliant news that they've started a version of OPD in England now.

I asked them to correct the story and they did:

Applicant Stephen Morris had wanted to build a single-story wood home on three acres of land where he, his partner and child would grow veg, farm chicken and ducks, and produce honey

This story is getting about. I don't know where this £6k figure comes from, but we certainly didn't see it. It might have been what our legal rep got!
