I'm going to start doing videos again as it's been a long, long while. Nothing fancy as I don't have time, but down-to-earth practical tips on extreme weather gardening, money-saving and boosting results naturally in the garden for person, plate and planet. 🌱
These are all topics I've been writing and teaching about for a long, long time.

From my gardening for free days for the Guardian back in 2013, to talks for the RHS, interviews in the media, to the many hands-on courses I've run from my training gardens over the years, I'm a longstanding expert on extreme weather gardening and I've won environmental journalist of the year and practical gardening journalist of the year awards for my work. I also run a super low maintenance but very productive community garden near to me in Wales with a lovely bunch of volunteers. πŸ’š

I'd love to hear which topics you would especially like me to cover over the weeks ahead. πŸ’šπŸ’š

How the plants at the community garden thrived with no watering during the heatwave with a selection of images and tips. 🌞

I had a lovely morning yesterday at the community garden I run near to me in Wales. I'm only here a few days a month so it has be extra low-maintenance and resilient but attractive and productive at the same time. I haven't been on site since the 15th May when I last run a workshop here. Here's how this worked with NO watering since then:

πŸ’š Use of stone around young plants protects the soil from drying out and can provide some support and part shade
πŸ’šThe mixed planting system I also use which I like to call free-planting means there are many tall plants which provide some part shade relief for young plants. There's lots of fennel, rocket, Swiss chard and perpetual spinach from last year (which I cut back so it grows on and many herbs)
πŸ’šI mulched the plants well after deep watering before the heatwave to provide further soil protection
πŸ’š The garden is no-dig and I bring in seedlings from my gardens with lots of mycorrhizal fungi to boost natural soil resilience
πŸ’šHeat can make plants more sensitive to so-called pests such as aphids and I did notice some of the apple trees had some, then I spotted all the ladybirds, ants and wasps which were feeding off the aphids so I let it be (this in the last image).

I use stone here because it was in ample supply in the grounds and because I believe in working with locally and freely available materials and it works so incredibly well in these beds and borders protecting plants and encouraging natural pest predators.

How do you use stone in the garden? I'd love to hear. ✨

A fabulous time at RHS Chelsea Flower Show preview day yesterday. Lots of team AG there scouting out ideas and inspiration for the magazine. Here are just some of us pictured and page on for some of the amazing garden features and designs.

Bright bold, joyful colours, nature-friendly planting, and much hope for sustainable gardening for the future was my take home here. It's fantastic to see how much the gardens have moved in this important direction over the years. πŸ’šπŸ’š

I was a bit worried about the newly planted out courgettes and sunflowers at the community garden with the crazy weather (and hail) here in w Wales this week, but I needn't have, as they are doing well. The mixed planted border has lots of tall-growing Swiss chard, perpetual spinach, chive, cottagers kale and other planting that affords protection and I use a lot of stone around new plants, and mulched the ground as well.
I'm only at the gardens a few times a month so the resilient gardening methods I've been writing about over the years and which are featured in my book The Climate Change Resilient Vegetable Garden (see last image) work incredibly well. It's such a productive, biodiverse and low maintenance space. I use stone salvaged from the site around plants throughout the year which helps protect the soil, and plants growing, and provides an attractive habitat for brilliant predators such as spiders, earwigs and ground beetles. In a wet summer I'd just check a bit more underneath for slugs but it all works so well. πŸ’šπŸŒ±
