Lambing has come to an end here. It’s been a pretty good one this year thanks to the weather. Even though Sam had a hand injury right before lambing and had to manage his group of 500 ewes one handed. Until there was a problem 😂.

We bought 6 stud rams last autumn and have enjoyed seeing their lambs hit the ground. So far we’ve been really pleased with them.

Below we have a romtex ewe with a pair of Ngaputahi growbulk lambs from last year’s import.

Hope everyone else’s lambing has gone well. Look forward to catching up with clients in due course to see how their rams faired.

We took 25 ram lambs 2 weeks ago to be CT scanned at Aberystwyth. This is super valuable meat yield data which feeds into the meat yield ebvs. Combining this with weights, back fat scans and genomic data means we can now build an awesome picture of carcass data within the flock.
Again this work is supported by farming connects’ welsh sheep genetics program so big thanks to them, an also the Innovis crew for pumping them through.

Happy New year folks (almost)! I hope everyone has a had an enjoyable festive period. I can’t believe it’s the end of another year. It is always a good opportunity to reflect on some of the highlights from the last 12 months. So for us some of our noteworthy points would be:

- Hosting NSA Welsh sheep in May
- Lambing the first lambs of our terminal stud flock
- 3 new rams imported from New Zealand
- Starting genomic recording
- Starting CT scanning of lambs
- Calf milk machine installed for our calf enterprise allowing us to increase numbers of calves reared.
- Retained 60 store calves to grow on for a year. The first grazable cows on the farm.

From everyone here at HCR we’d like to wish you all the very best for 2026.

PAC testing time. Another year of the Welsh sheep genetics program has allowed us to methane test 70 ram lambs which has delivered us methane ebvs for the first time. Rams go in individual chambers for 50 minutes and have readings taken at 25 and 50 minutes. I have been very surprised with how chilled they are with being in them. At the same time we had tissue samples taken for genomic testing.

Shock horror we didn’t have customers crying out for low methane rams this year.
How this trait will be used within the industry is still largely unknown. For me this is a long term approach in subtly making sheep more sustainable (irrespective of your view on where sheep sit on the CO2 footprint scale) and collecting this data can paint a picture of which stock are low emitters and how they stack up in other traits. From last years data we could see that low emitters had the highest growth and meat and had generally better figures. Methane had little to no correlation in survival, FEC or fertility (which is certainly not a bad thing). This aligns with industry research which also shows a favourable correlation with feed efficiency. So if nothing else this appears to be a decent proxy for breeding for other traits.

Thanks to Miriam from Innovis for the excellent service and respect for trucking that beast around the country. And thank you to Farming Connect’s Welsh sheep genetics program for funding this work.

Straight off the plane and straight to work! These are the guys we’ve been patiently waiting for. Their arrival party was an all you can eat buffet and a group of on heat ladies all to themselves. Welsh hospitality at its best.
We have a two Ngaputahi ram hoggets, one Romney and one Growbulk. We’ve done quite a bit of work with the Cameron family in the past and loved the progeny we’ve had from both breeds. We also have a Romney shearling from Alistair Reeve’s of Waimai. It was used in their stud flock as a ram lamb and is very high figured. This is the first time for us buying from Waimai and they come with very high repute. They farm in a very high parasite challenge and in a hard farming environment and have a great, balanced selection criteria.
So all in all, really pleased with them so far and to finally have them on farm. I’m excited to see what they bring to the table. Stay tuned!

Are you in the dark about what top quality maternal genetics can do for your flock? Doris here was…….

Anyone can feed an animal to look good but to really create good maternal genetics you need to test your animals and record the results.

Its even more important that the ram you are buying comes from a system which tests its stock. Why? Enter anti-fragility and epigenetics. Anti-fragility is an immune like response that bodies go through in environments of challenge. Be it cold, disease, reduction in food quality and quantity. The result can be a bounce back or a net gain in ability, so when that animal encounters that challenge again they are physiologically more capable to deal with it. Then comes epigenetics, changes in dna sequences that regulate gene expression. Essentially, this is real time changes in the genetic makeup of animals based on the environment that they encounter.
So if a sheep has been exposed to a less favourable environment and maintained production, not only will it be more conditioned to that challenge but so will its progeny.

This is why the system where your breeding stock comes from is so important. The last thing you want to see is a perfect growing environment free from challenges. That should be your focus as a commercial farmer.

We record a million and one things. But the most important thing we do I feel is stress testing the stock, in particular using worm challenges. We want to a degree a high worm challenge to see who is still thriving and who isn’t. This time of year we are collecting a lot data, from back fat scans, weights, dag scores, individual lamb fecs. That data is always more valuable if animals had to work because finding the best performers becomes easier.

🌱 🌧️ ✈️ 🐑
2 years ago to the day, the grass still looked better than it does now. We’ve certainly made some improvements in the last few weeks with the rain putting an end to the months of drought. Finally we can start building covers for tupping and winter.

These were 2 imported rams from Ngaputahi. We currently have 3 rams in quarantine in NZ that arrive in early November. 2 from Ngaputahi and 1 from Waimai. We are really excited to see them in the flesh and put them straight to work. Stay tuned!!

It is still green …….just.

Like a lot of people across the country we’ve got some pretty dry conditions. We have had little to no grass growth for a long time. Luckily some reseeded grass and clover and herbal leys are hanging on giving us some green. Ewes are currently on clean up operations. Forecast is looking better, everyone do your rain dance 🕺 🌧️
