There is a mountain in the far north west of Scotland that does not sit in a range. It stands entirely alone out of a flat wilderness, and the ground it stands on is among the oldest rock on the surface of the earth. 🏔️

Its name is Suilven, from the Norse for pillar, because that is exactly what it looks like from the sea, and Norse sailors named a great deal of that coast. In Gaelic it is Sula Bheinn. It rises out of Assynt in Sutherland, a strange, drowned looking country of bare rock, peat bog and hundreds of small lochans, with no road and almost no building for miles in any direction.

The geology is genuinely astonishing. The floor of that wilderness is Lewisian gneiss, formed roughly three billion years ago, some of the oldest rock anywhere on the planet. Sitting on top of it is Torridonian sandstone, laid down about a billion years ago by rivers running off a mountain range that no longer exists. Suilven is what is left after ice sheets ground almost all of that sandstone away. It is not a mountain that was pushed up. It is a mountain that was left behind.

Assynt was also emptied of its people. This is Clearance country, and the emptiness that visitors call unspoiled is in large part manufactured. But it has an unusual ending. In 1993 the crofters of Assynt bought their own estate, the first community buyout of its kind in Scotland, and set off a movement that has since put hundreds of thousands of Highland acres back into local hands.

So when you look at Suilven you are looking at three billion years of rock, two centuries of eviction, and one stubborn modern victory, all in the same frame.

That mountain was standing before there was anything alive on land, and it will be standing long after every argument about who owns it is finished.

Some ground does not belong to us. We belong to it. 💙

What an otterly fantastic sight! 🦦

These recent guests sent us some lovely photos of Mr Otter that likes to frequent the waters here at Mountview. He’s tucking into some delicious fish on the rocks and doesn’t seem to mind the camera! Our guests are often lucky enough to spot a wide array of wildlife here in Lochinver.
