Inside the tunnels

While we’ve been away from the shop, we’ve still been busy keeping everything ticking over in the tunnels.

The lemongrass is coming along nicely and the Thai basil is looking very healthy.

Then we’ve got the peppers, which are getting bigger by the day. There’s plenty of fruit on the plants now and they’re really starting to look the part.

There’s a surprising amount of work involved in keeping everything growing happily — watering, feeding, tying, moving things around and generally keeping an eye on what’s doing what.

And, of course, trying to stop the plants taking over the place!

A look around the field…

The shop might be closed for a few days, but the plants clearly didn’t get the memo!

There’s plenty going on out in the field at the moment. The potatoes are coming along well, the yellow beetroot is filling out nicely, and our rainbow radish are giving us some lovely colours.

The Swiss chard is looking particularly good too.

And then there’s the sweetcorn.

I couldn’t resist pulling one to have a taste on one of the roasting hot days we had. They’re not quite ready yet, but they were already incredibly sweet.

I think that one may have disappeared before it ever had a chance of making it back to the shop!

The field is certainly keeping us busy, but it’s good to see everything coming along.

***Fresh out of the tunnels this morning.***

There’s nothing quite like fruit and veg that’s been picked at the right time.

Our strawberries are beautifully sweet and juicy, just as they should be. Once you’ve tasted strawberries picked fresh from the plant, the supermarket ones are hard to go back to.

The tomatoes have ripened naturally on the vine, giving them that home-grown taste that only comes with time.

We’ve only picked a few cucumbers today, but that’s on purpose. We cut them to order wherever we can, so they’re as fresh and crisp as possible when you take them home.

If you’re passing, pop in and treat yourself to produce that’s travelled a few hundred yards, not a few hundred miles.

Fresh today:
🍓 Local Strawberries – £1.25 (150g)
🍅 Local Tomatoes – £1.50 (500g)
🥒 Fresh Cucumbers – cut to order for maximum freshness.

🌸 Plant of the Week – Dahlias 🌸

I don’t think there’s a flower that earns its place in the garden quite like a Dahlia.

They’ve been flowering away for a few weeks now, but they’re only getting better. Every day another variety opens, and every one seems to have its own character. You think you’ve picked a favourite, then another one comes into flower and changes your mind.

People often think Dahlias are a lot of work. Honestly, they’re not. Give them a decent feed, keep taking the old flowers off, and they’ll reward you with flowers right through until the first frost.

The red one in the photo has been catching everyone’s eye this week, but I’m still not sure I could pick a favourite.

If you’re looking for something to keep the garden full of colour towards the end of summer, they’re hard to beat.

Pop in and have a wander. There’s plenty to choose from and we’d be happy to help you find one you’ll enjoy.

🍅 The first tomatoes are starting to ripen, our peppers are filling out beautifully, and we’ve been busy potting on Pony cucumber plants… It’s another exciting week here at Border Plants!

Our mixed peppers are coming along brilliantly too and are producing some fantastic-sized fruits.

We’ve also potted on our Pony cucumber plants, which will soon be available in the shop – perfect for growing your own fresh cucumbers at home.

💐 We couldn’t resist picking more flowers from the field this week and creating some beautiful hand-tied bouquets, bursting with colour and freshly picked for the shop.

Every week brings us a little closer to harvest, and it’s great to see all the hard work paying off. Thank you for supporting our small family business – we can’t wait to share even more homegrown produce and flowers with you over the coming weeks.

This is what supporting local looks like. 💚

Seeing the produce we’ve grown stocked by Paterson’s Fruit & Veg makes us incredibly proud.

Local businesses supporting local growers means fresher produce, fewer food miles and stronger communities.

Thanks for the support, and thank you to everyone who chooses to shop local. 🍅🫜🥬

🌱 Monday Grower’s Diary

Another busy week here at Border Plants!

Out in the field we’ve been planting Turnips, radishes, spinach, swede, swiss chard, mixed lettuce and iceberg lettuce. Some have been sown from seed, while others have been planted as plugs, keeping us busy as we plan ahead for the weeks to come.

Inside the tunnels, things are really starting to take off. Our first cucumbers are now ready and are picked fresh to order in the shop. 🥒

Our tomatoes are looking fantastic too, with the first homegrown fruits expected to be ready in around a week’s time. 🍅

A huge thank you to everyone who has visited us this week. Whether you’ve come for fresh produce, plants or just stopped by for a chat, your support means the world to our small family business.

What are you most looking forward to seeing in the shop next – our homegrown tomatoes or freshly picked cucumbers?
